I remember hearing Nicky say that once he started getting more competitive, Rossi got less friendly.

That is generally the way it works amongst team mates, and has been like that for as long as I can remember. Phil Read and Bill Ivy must have had the most acrimonious split in team history (an episode that sadly ended with Ivy getting killed before it was ever close to being resolved).

Most 'team leaders' will be very accomodating and helpful to what they see as a junior team member. As soon as that 'junior' starts to perform and threaten the leaders' position then it all changes pretty quickly and the gloves come off pronto. Just look at the current situation in F1 at Red Bull!

Journalists of course add fuel to the fire and will make a lot more of many of these so called 'grudge matches' because it sells papers. The rivalry betweeen Hailwood/Agostini, Sheene/Roberts, Rossi/Biaggi and Fogarty/Chili (and everyone else Fogarty raced!) was fanned by the press as much as anyone else.

Just this week Nicky Hayden was 'misquoted' as saying that he thought Stoner was being disrespectful leaving Ducati (although he of course denies it and blames translation by the press!).

The first rule in racing is to beat your team mate, so as long as you have team mates you will have rivalry and underhand tactics at work : ) Thankfully most of the time these just liven up the sport and don't do lasting damage : )

Stoner fastest followed by Lorenzo, Dovizioso, Pedrosa and SPIES.

The American contingent is split by some Italian guy named Rossi, followed by Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards. The final American in the mix, Roger Lee Hayden, was down in 17th... almost four seconds off of Stoner's time.

It seems that Stoner has started performing again. So far this year, after the crashes in the early races, he lost his faith in the bike&himself, but now he is going really fast.

Why is it that when Stoner is going fast Hayden is going slow, over a 1s slower ?? Is this a big Coincidence, Stoner's good form, or Ducati has changed the bike characteristics to suit Stoner again ???

Pedrosa proved why HRC does not consider him their best hope for a championship. He won last week, but he gets beaten by Dovizioso so far in Laguna. He is inconsistent.

Friday practice doesn't count for much. Today will be more telling.

Rossi's complaining of pain in his leg... despite the higher number of left turns at Laguna (like Sachsenring), the few right turns (and the corkscrew) are more physically demanding. I'll be surprised if he's a podium threat this round.

It sure was sweet to see the rat weasel throw it away like he did last year at Indianapolis! Maybe he'll pull a double and do it again at Indy this year!
Of course, Lorenzo was catching him, and I think Lorenzo would have won anyway, but to see little Dani shoot himself in the foot was really special. I also liked that the camera showed Puig after the crash; and he wasn't looking too happy either.
However, the BIG news is that Rossi made it on the box! Recovering from a broken leg and a broken shoulder on a track that is very physical, and he passed and held off Dovizioso for third. The guy is Superhuman!

Very disappointed Ben made a mistake while chasing down Rossi. I expected more from him.

And yes, I hope someone captured that scene of Puig and puts it on YouTube. I could watch that over and over!!

Boy we're going to have to eat a lot of crow if Pedrosa ends up riding a Buell in world superbike.

I missed most of this race because I was watching the other channel, so only caught a part mid race that looked quite static. Couldn't be bothered to stay up to watch the rest so when I turned in I expected the result to be Lorenzo, Stoner, Dovi/Spies. Things must have happened later on as I've just seen that Rossi got a podium (great result!).

Don't sweat on that one!!

Spies was chasing down Rossi but blew a turn and let Nicky through instead. Rossi managed to chase down Dovi after Spies was no longer an issue and passed him to grab the final podium spot.

Highlight for me was watching the rat weasel fold when Lorenzo applied the screws.

About 0:39 into the video. It's a beautiful thing to watch... over and over.

Not only the crash, but Puig's response. Simply beautiful!

Anyone coming to Indy for the MotoGP? We are trying to get a bunch of locals and out of towners together. I've got spare room in the garage and the house for anyone that needs it!

Jaime; Last year, Terri and I stayed at the Crowne Plaza for $49.00/night. The Motel 6 was $66.00/night.
I booked the room through Hotwire.com, after somebody on ADV rider posted about it. It was a much nicer room than any Motel 6 room I ever stayed in.
The only downside is that once you book the room, you can't cancel. However, if you're even half the GP addict that I think you are, that wouldn't be a serious drawback.

Crusty, where is the Crowne Plaza? The Motel 6 is less than two miles from the track. Every year I TRY to get the Red Roof (across the street) but by the time I look, it's already full.

Whoda thunk the Crowne Plaza would be cheaper than the Motel 6??

Jaime; The Crowne Plaza is Downtown. It's a converted Railroad Station. It's a very nice hotel. At the price we paid, I felt I should have been wearing a mask and pointing a six shooter at the clerk. It's well worth the extra driving distance to the track.
Jerry & Carol; Terri and I are not positive that we'll be able to make it to Indy. We hope to go, but there are other circumstances that might stop us.
We enjoyed ourselves so much last year when we went, despite all the things that went wrong; that if there's a way to make it happen, we'll find it.

Got a link to the "Crowne Plaza" at that price?
Also, looking for tickets for maybe 6 of us from Chicago. Covered, preferably seats w/backs (not bleachers) with visible corners for race day only. Deals or suggestions as to where to buy.

Also need tickets for the "Mile" on Sat.
Thanks.

Go to Hotwire.com. They don't tell you the name of the hotel until you book it. They'll just say something like 3 Star hotel in Indianapolis for $XX/ night. After you book it, they tell you the name.
Of course, it might not be the Crowne Plaza, this year. It night be another 3 Star hotel like the Hilton or the Sheraton. But for less than the price of Motel 6, I think it will be worth it.

VERRRY interesting analysis of Lorenzo and Rossi's rivalry:

And further reinforcement of my belief that Colin Edwards is THE man, whether he stands on the top step or not.

Ah well... it was confirmed... Rossi will be in red next year. After all this time, and all the denials I was sure hoping he was going to punk the media and declare that he was going to finish his career with Yamaha.

Next year I'll be rooting even harder for Ben Spies but I'm thinking next year will likely be a repeat of this year for Lorenzo. He's proven himself and I'm pretty sure even if Rossi hadn't injured himself Lorenzo would still be the man in front this year.

With all the reports about Rossi though, I don't see any mention of Burgess??

I've never been one for conspiracy theories, but the Brno GP looked decidedly dodgy from a Yamaha perspective.

Rossi was quick in practice, quick in qualifying before his fall, yet unable to get within a second a lap of Lorenzo and Pedrosa. He was only just able to match the times set by Ben Spies on the 'slow' Tech3 bike too.

I have a sneaking feeling that Yamaha may have decided to 'Put Rossi in his place' on the eve of his big announcement and give him a bike that was just not capable of winning or of running anywhere near Yamahas new chosen sons for 2011.
This isn't because I'm a Rossi fan (I'm more a racing fan than of any one rider) but simply because it just doesn't add up on all previous evidence of performance at Brno and for the preceding races.

The Japanese factories are well know for 'dity tricks' and it would have been a great way for Yamaha to show who was boss on the day that Rossi decided to spill the beans on his 2011 plans (at last!).

Other than that, what a boring race! (again!). Dovi was lucky to avoid getting run over and Boutista seems to have developed a knack of binning it on the last corner quite regularly, but other than that there were no highlights I can think of......

Moto2 was thankfully a much better race : )

As long as Rossi is winning everything is right and normal and "clean".
Rossi's fans start to think about conspiracy theories and "dirty jap tricks" as soon as Rossi starts to loose....
Rossi's fans think......Rossi lost to Lorenzo and Spies.......so he must have a 2nd rate bike.
What about last year when Rossi played "cat and mouse" with Lorenzo at the final lap ??? Rossi's fans just assumed that Rossi is simply the best , and never crossed their minds that Rossi's bike was more advanced.

Rossi's fans are fanny people.
I still think that Spies raced a factory bike at Brno for the first time , and that Rossi's bike was 2nd rate compared to Lorenzo's. I used to think that last year lorenzo's bike was 2nd rate compared to Rossi's.

I will actually enjoy if from now on , Rossi is the 3rd fastest Yamaha rider.
But from avery possible angle, Rossi joining Ducati can only be a good thing for motoGP and racing fans.
I am not that sure , if Rossi's fans will like Rossi's results. Of course Rossi is more than capable of winning a title with Ducati ,but I think that Ducati will have to redesign their bike .
