I just picked up a new EBC front rotor for my S3 from American Sport Bike. The tag on the rotor says to always use new pads when changing the rotor. I just replaced the front pads 6 weeks ago with OEM parts and am disinclined to fork out another $40 or so for new pads when the ones I have are almost new. Does anyone have experience good or bad with reusing pads? Since the surfaces look good I figure with careful break in I might get away with it.

Kurt

Kurt -- always chancey, I'm thinkin, to install anything except new pads with a new rotor -- depending on the shape of the old rotor, your pads could very easily have picked up ridges and the like from the old disk == this would have the effec t of greatly reducing the amount of material contacting the new disk, and possibly goobering up your new disk, to boot, but you knew that ;-} -

if it was me, and the choice wasn't between new pads and food, I'd spring for the new pads

Yeah, I know what the by-the-book decision is, but I figure its mostly for CYA. Its only a 5:1 cost differential between rotor and pads so I'm trying to figure the odds. If its better than 5:1 to get away with it I'm ahead. Visually everything is fine, pads still look new & no hot spotting on the rotor & well within spec for thickness. Provided someone doesn't post saying "I thought the same thing and it turned out badly, don't be a knucklehead!" I'll probably go for it.

Sand the pads down with some 180 or so grit sandpaper to remove any glazing/wear from the other rotor and you are good to go.
