Well after fifteen long years of exile from biking, I got myself an Xb12R.  Two months and 3000 miles later, I'm eager to take my first ever lessons on a track, but have a few questions I hope someone can answer: I used to be a pretty good rider, but I'm not kidding myself about my current ability. It's been a long time since then. Does anybody know of tracks/lessons that are specifically novice or beginner friendly in Florida? I don't want to get out there and feel like I'm in the way, or that I should push my bike faster than I'm capable. Besides the obvious (fresh oil, fairly new tires, thorough bike inspection), is there anything I should do to my bike to prepare for this? I feel like the XBR was custom made to fit exacly what I want in a bike, and I love it dearly. Are crashes common among beginners? Should I pick up an old beater I care little for to do this with? Check out http://www.jenningsgp.com/ for track dates. For what needs to be done a good guideline is check out http://www.nesba.com/Info/downloads/manual.pdf Stuff to take to the track. Water lots of it. A friend/wife/girlfriend. Grill and meat for lunch. Some sort of shelter from the sun, an easy-up. Water. Chairs, tools, and don't forget the beer for when the day is done and did I say plenty of water. Yes a beater bike is a great idea. I saw a former race ex500 for sale for 800 dollars in the Miami area. You can find nice track bike for 2000 or less. Plenty less then what an accident will cost. Accidents do happen, how frequent? Not that much. You will never have to worry about being a beginner on a track. Everyone was a beginner. Beginner groups are pretty structured so you don't have to worry about anyone else. REMEMBER RIDE YOUR OWN PACE. If someone is faster they will find a way around you. It's a great time. For a few other clubs check out nesba.com sportbiketracktime.com and penguinracing.com They tend to stay away from Florida during the summer months so the Jennings site might be your best bet. The guy who runs Superbikes and Ski (sorry can't remember his name) told me that during the summer it's pretty slim pickings for this. Penguin Roadracing School will be in Homestead Dec. 3. I'm going to call two others I heard about... |
