I saw a picture of a stock uly top case with LED lights where mine only has a reflector. Does anyone know where to get one of these,or is it a custom job. Thanks |

It's a custom job using led strips from http://www.oznium.com/ |

It's an easy mod, cheap, and I think it adds quite a bit to the safety. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/445541.html |

I purchased 2 of these 2 foot strips: and cut each one in half. I have 2 12" rows for tail lights, and 2 additional 12" rows when brakes are applied. No signals in my top case yet, but the 12" strips leave plenty of room at the side behind the red lens to add in signals later. BTW, I wired everything into the top case via a trailer wiring harness and connector. That way I can remove the case easily, although I have yet to find the need to do so. |

MikeF5000 has done trunk exterior lighting, and included an interior trunk light to boot. Might look up that thread or PM him. |

I did mine with 2 30cm long SMD 5050 LED strips. like $6.00 shipped for both of of eBay. I too did a strip on the under side of the trunk lid, with a mercury switch so it comes on when open. Get the strips, some of this sleeving: http://www.mcmaster.com/#9196K2 And one of these weather pack connecters for easy removal: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Weather-Pack-4-Pin- Square-Sealed-Wiring-Connector-Kit-_W0QQcmdZViewIt emQQhashZitem1c066f7cb3QQitemZ120367054003QQptZRac eQ5fCarQ5fParts#ht_3368wt_1088 Add some wire and you'll be in business for like $20! I did not do the running light/brake light thing as MikeF did, although that would be an easy mod. Just brake light on mine. They are stupid bright, I like that they "surprise" the drivers! |

Aj_brooklyn, I added 2 LED strips very much the same as Mikef5000 did also. I mounted a diode and resistor in a small project box which I attached to the seat latch bracket. I tried to make it look as if it were factory installed. I have it wired so both LED strips are on about half brightness for tail lights and then they both go to full brightness when the brake is applied. I used a weatherproof connector so I can easily remove the top box. So far they have worked great for 5,000 miles but I will admit they are not quite as bright as I would like in bright sunlight. Here are a few pics: 2 LED strips w/aluminum tape backing:

Motorbike, do you have a parts list and maybe a diagram or some instructions on the diode/ resistor kit in the project box and the LED's? I've been wanting to do it but I wasn't sure how to make the lights dim for running. |

I'd be interest in the details of the connector. I added a Whelan LED brakelight to my Outdoorsman case. For the time I simply ran the wiring direct with no ability to remove the case (I very seldom do) but would like to add a good connector, something like a screw lock that I can mount in the side of the case. |

Blasterd and Court, I cannot take credit for the design of this system. I had the idea to do this but was unsure also so I looked on Badweb. Lo and behold, MikeF5000 had already done this on his XT. He posted wiring schematics and pics and I used his advice and added a few things of my own. The diode and resistor really don't have to be mounted in a box but I did it anyway. You could just run the diode and resistor in-line and cover them with shrink tubing to keep it simple. I have been trying to use the Badweb search function this morning to find MikeF5000's post but it does not seem to work, not sure why. These are the LED strips I used: http://cgi.ebay.com/Extandable-5050-SMD-Red-LED-12 V-30CM-Strip-Waterproof-/390229139906?pt=LH_Defaul tDomain_0&hash=item5adb7821c2 Very inexpensive but they seem to work well! I picked up the electronic parts at Radio Shack: *3x2x1 Project box. *3A 50PIV diode #276-1141. *100 ohm 1 Watt resistor #271-152. *ICB90 PC Board (Cut to fit box). *2-wire weatherproof connector I picked up at a local Auto Value parts house. *In-line fuse holder with 3A fuse. All other parts are common automotive wiring and can be purchased at any auto supply store. You need to tap into and "T" off of the 3 wires that go to the stock tail light. They are black, orange and red. Run the black ground wire directly to the LED strip's ground wire. Run the orange tail light wire to the resistor and connect the output of the resistor to the hot wire of the LED strips. Run the red brake light wire to the diode. Connect the other end of the diode to the output end of the resistor. With this setup, you only need 2 wires running up to the pair of LED strips. ( I hope all this makes sense to you.) MikeF5000 also added an interior courtesy light to his top box, which is a nice touch. I rarely ride at night and decided to keep mine simple. Thanks. |

What are the diode and resistor for? I don't have them on my set up and haven't had any issues... But mine was pretty simple and something I came up with a while ago. |

Motorbike, that's a common Weatherpak connector. If you get a blank female plug with solid seals it'll lock onto the male end and keep everything clean. Look better than those red condoms too. |

Court, click on the link I provided up above, it is to a weather pack connector on eBay. |

Griffmeister, I considered that idea but could not find a blank female plug with solid seals. Are you talking about a regular female end with the wires clipped? Concerning looks of the red caps, I rarely ride with the trunk removed anyway. Thanks. Seanp, The resistor is to lower the voltage to the LEDs so they are about half brightness for tail lights and the diode prevents back flow of current which would cause the bike's brake light to be on whenever the key is on. My LED strips are set up so they are on dim like a tail light and get brighter when the brake is applied. Thanks. |

Oh yeah, I didn't think about some parts stores not having everything. Yes there are solid seals. They are useful when a harness has a 4 wire connector but you only have to use 2 wires, you blank off the other two. If you want to PM a mail address I could send a couple of solid seals to you. |

I believe you will find MikeF5000's Info re: this topic at his website. http://www.mikef5000.com/ulysses-tires.html This goes to his tire thread, but there is a home button, and the top box wiring topic is off the main page. Druelly (Message edited by Druelly on June 20, 2011) |
