Everything was going so smoothly. I removed the old one without much trouble and proceeded to install the new one. The first step in installing the new one was screwing the new cable fitting into the case. I get to the last few threads and the fitting starts to feel loose and just keeps spinning. I take the wrench off and look to see what the issue is. Next thing I know, half the fitting is sliding down the cable. I get a closer look only to see disaster. The threaded piece broke off in the case.

I sat there for 5 minutes completely dumbfounded staring at the cable in disbelief. After I gathered myself back up, I began the task of removing the case to see if I would be lucky enough to twist the fitting back out. It took me an hour to get the threaded piece back out of the case. It was no easy task and now I'm out another $80 or more for another clutch cable, a case gasket, and more oil. Big SIGH.

Wow that sucks. I've had moments like that before. I've just sat and glared at a few broken Jeep parts for a long time. It can almost bring a tear to your eye. They might flow, if they weren't held back by the wall of rage. Sitting, in this moment, is the best thing to do.

I hope you have better luck on the next one.

That fitting on the end of the clutch cable is made out of aluminum and will break off REALLY EASY. Since it seals on an o-ring at the case, it barely needs to be more than finger-tight. I found this out the hard way on my S3 a few years back. Sorry you had to learn it the hard way too.

Not to rub salt in a wound, but if you had read the clutch cable threads in the knowledge vault, everyone cautions against over tightening the fitting.

They also caution about dropping the cable end clip into the tranny, yet I watched in awe as it fell in. Took about an hour to fish it out. We've all been there.

American Sport Bike cautions that even the slightest sideways pressure will snap the threads off, and can do this long before you get to the point of tightening down against the o-ring.

The good news is you shouldn't have any trouble getting the "stub" out of the primary. I imagine deliberately made so fragile so that if you crash the bike on that side, you snap the clutch cable rather than ripping a hole in your primary cover.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I finished up the cable and all of the other work and so far no leaks. Damn battery is dead now, so that will be my next purchase. Next project is removing the rear wheel for a tire change (Harley shop won't do it unless I bought the tire from them).
