Well I don't know how much more I need to see this year but a tradgedy happened last night.

Me and my girl took a cab downtown last night for a night of lots of adult fun. When we got to the corner where the bar was at there was a guy riding his harley in front of us. we started slowing because we would be getting out. When he went thru the intersection a car waiting to turn stooped waiting. He hit the guy head on.

I jumped out of the cab and went running up to him, he was laying on his back in the street, of course this is indiana and he was not wearing a helmet. I got up to him and he had a blank stare and had very labored breathing. Some one with a cell phone had called the paramedics and they were on their way. His breathing sounded like death and it was slowing so I administered cpr to try and keep him going. I did this til the paramedics showed up, which was only a maybe about 3 or 4 mins.

when they got there they took over. They worked on him for a few mins and got the tube down him, but then he stopped breathing and his heart stopped. They started working on his chest to get him going again and kept on working on him while getting him in the ambulance.

They lifelined him to louisville I heard but he didn't make it. His last name was grieves. his first is either greg or gary. He was 43 and I found out yes he was married and has kids.

I never want to hear that sound again or see that death stare ever again either. I did what I could but it wasn't enuff. he was not breathing when I pulled away once the paramedics showed up.

Everyone please ride safe and wear you helmets, even tho it wasn't head injuries for him, I found out it was internals but just the same wear your helmets please and all the other gear.

and please be safe. I don't want to see or hear anymore this year. It has been too much for me so far.

remember also

you are your brothers keeper

D@mn, that sucks!!!!

Brian....you've got some serious good karma sheit coming your way. I don't know if I'd get back on a bike if I'd seen what you have in the past few months. Remind me to buy you a few adult beverages in June.

Be strong my brother!!!

sorry about the "mis-spelling", the censor struck me down

Sorry to hear about that Brian. It's tough to be that close - impossible to not let it get to you. Experiences from my time in the ER and MP still haunt me from time to time.

I find solace in knowing I did what was humanly possible - you should too - you did and do good.

Brian..
I can't tell you anything that you don't already know. It's hard to see someone die. It's even harder once your involved in some way, as in trying to save a life... or trying to protect one. It's never a good sight.. and to see it once is one time too many.. Some of us have seen it too many times and in too many variations to think that there couldn't be another variation. But there always is.. It's sad, and most of the time, so God damn pointless. But, there is nothing we can do about it. Please, don't let it get to you. A few years ago, it was almost you, but it wasn't. An old partner of mine once told me that after a close call like that, God has a stop watch on you. You're on someone else's time.. Well, perhaps he was on someone else's time, and it just ran out. The only thing you can possibly do is make sure that you're own time is spent as well as possible. Someday, I know my stopwatch will stop, and my borrowed time will end. Dwelling on it won't make it any easier.

What happened sucked. You did what you had too do because you are a decent and good person. Now, please, move on my friend, don't let your stop watch run faster or stop short because you are 'waiting' for it.. or because it all seems so pointless.

Now, go on, live it to the fullest.. after all we have a cold drink waiting to be shared in North Carolina in September. We should all try and be safe, sometimes we're not. But we need to be reminded every now and then. And you have done that.. Now go find that girl and hold her close.. or enjoy that sunrise.. or dance in your underwear to that off kilter tune. Whatever.. Just stay yourself.. and smile.

Later,

thanks for the kind words.

I just want everyone to be safe and have fun. sometimes we all forget the safe part

Bubba I know what that look on the mans face was like for you to see.Been there its down right the most scarey thing to see.It wasn't a accident that I seen though it was cancer related and the labored breathing and the stare of fear of death. Its a hard one to forget so I feel for you.

My dad is in ICU right now, I'm not looking for any sympathy, but I was able to take the Big Kid up to see him yesterday, I have been there everyday this week and watching the other rooms you kind of get the idea what is happening in them, gunshots, old age, self inflicted car injuries, and the guy with road rash....which I pointed out to the Big Kid on the way out of ICU. I am hoping this has opened his eyes and helps him modify his riding style a bit and wash off some of the bravado and testosterone. I told him the natural order is the parent to go first, and the best thing he can do for me is to follow that plan. Life is good and precious, like a vapor.

It's saddening and depressing to read a post like this. Lord knows you've seen enough this year, Bubba! Let's all keep in mind that riding has it's hazards and if you ride with that in mind, you stand a much better chance avoiding them when they happen. When I see traffic I try to imagine what stupid, unbelievable behavior the other guy could possibly do, and about one time in ten they reward me with a display of intelligence of your average groundhog. At least I'm ready for it. I see the quote "Ride it like you stole it" a lot. I'd rather see "Ride it like you want to hug your kids tonight". I like a full-throttle roll-on as much as the rest of you,(duh, that's why I ride a Buell?) but please choose your times and places wisely. And wear your gear-always. I saw at least eight bikes out this morning and not one skid lid in the lot. Also, only one set of leathers. Please people, be careful. You only get one shot and I don't want to be reading a sad post about you tomorrow.

1 in 10,the drivers in your area must be better than out here.I use the same assumption while riding and am rewarded more often than that.I think I have successfully instilled that thinking in my (just) 18 y.o. son.

Bubba,

You make a good point, that we need to live life to the fullest. And be safe - there's no reason to give your life up early because you weren't careful. But there's no reason to be so careful that you don't fully live life. There's got to be a balance.

You did a good thing, trying to save that man. Many people, in such a situation, would stand there, not knowing what to do. I've never been in such a situation, and I really can't say what I would do if I'd been in your shoes. I only hope that I would react the same way.

Flubber,

You should be very proud of yourself... you did EXACTLY the right thing. I feel bad for you and your girlfriend and this man's family... but it was just his time I suppose (sorry if it pisses people off, but that is what I believe).

I hope if this ever does happen to me I have someone like you nearby to help... hang in there and ride safe...

well, actually I do have a job, its not motorcycle related, but my blood pressure was just a tab over the borderline to past DOT specs. I will go back in at the end of the week and get it checked again.
gotta go find a regular doctor and get this taken care of. I guess my family history caught up with me finally.

no its not a truck driver job altho I will be driving a truck, but its kinda me going back into business for myself.

You know how I don't do well with bosses that don't reward you for good work. So I am going back to what I know. Kinda excited.

Just brought my T-Pro chest protector back out as a result of this post, I wear it under my Aerostitch jacket. Moto injury statistics show that the most frequent injury is to the feet and lower legs, #1 fatal injury is head injury, #2 is CHEST injuries. Even the HD people wear boots, but fatal injuries are left unaddressed.

Bubba...Just tell the Doc the reason your Blood Pressure is up is because of the stress of unemployment and the excitement of the new job opportunity. Also, don't provide any negative family medical history.

Worked for me and should work for you as long as that doctor doesn't do any blood tests for your cholesteral and triglicerides.

Good luck!!!

Buckinfubba,

Your description of thant accident is almost the same story I heard last November. The other story saddly was about a good freind (close as a brother) of mine. I hope people take your advice on riding gear, my freind was in a full face, vanson, and boots but internal injuries took him anyway. Any way use the gear, anything less than a head-on, you'll be thankful.

Brian, you did what most people wouldnt in a situation like that, jump right in and try to make a difference.Everybody needs riding gear, that can make the difference from a recovery,to a death.Do all you can,be prepared as you can, then go out there a live life!IMHO,when its time to go,its time to go,most of us have no idea when or how that will happen, but it will.My prayers go out to his family.
