So I've read about the gas fume & drip issues, and I 've thought to myself, c'mon guys haven't you owned a bike before. My past ninja's, R1's, etc and certainly my dirt bikes & motard all give off that smell of victory in the garage, stop complaining. Um, apparently I haven't ridden in high enough temps, but now I have and holy shnikey's - I need me the cannister fix. My garage smelled like it might explode when I came back out, and I have 2 convertibles sharing the garage so this won't cut it now that temps are well into 90's etc. So I'm sorry for judging anyone in my mind, you're right, it can be a real problem, lesson learned. That is all, carry-on. | ||

lol i thought the same thing and mine lives outside the smell isn't what bothers me so much. it's the liquid fuel pouring out onto my rear tire while riding that bothers me the most | ||

I still haven't experienced this "problem" on either of my bikes. Faint fuel smell yes, but even my XB and Blast will do it on high days. | ||

guess you're lucky then Froggy i was riding and made a left from a light and the rear end got loose on me got stopped at my destination and sure enough was dripping raw fuel. when i was sitting at the light i could smell fuel but didn't think much of it because of the vent being so close. have noticed stains on the driveway several times but only had it run liquid fuel out while riding that once. once is more than enough for something like that | ||

Welcome to our hell... Fortunately, I have a swamp cooler that pulls in outside air. When I come home and it's hot, I leave the garage door open a few inches, leave the house-garage door open, turn the blowers on high, and it vents the fumes out. An hour or two later I shut everything and it's fine. But, yes, before I did this, my entire first floor would smell of Buell. | ||

Boogieman: How full do you fill your tank? I used to have liquid fuel issues after I filled up, but not filling beyond the separator plate seems to have largely resolved that. | ||

Dman, it takes a big man to admit he's wrong.  I thought the same thing. Every bike I've had emitted a stink. The R takes it to a whole new level. Mine dumped gas on the garage floor. It was way too much. The dealer put in the canister for free when I did it. You may need to argue your case a little more these days. HD isn't as willing as they used to be on the canister. | ||

Yeah, there's a difference between "Smells faintly of gas" and "Holy crap, I need to leave the garage door open so I don't blow the house up when my water heater fires." | ||

Mine leaves a good 3-4" wide puddle every time I ride it for more than 30 minutes. I just leave it outside for a couple of hours before pushing it inside. | ||

NHTSA should be informed and HD-Buell should issue a recall before someone gets hurt/ burned/ killed or blows their garage/ home up. when the hot water heater pilot light ignites the gas fumes. Sam  | ||

Good post Dman. I love it when someone says THEY'VE never had an issue, therefore it simply must not exist. I ignore those folks! I've had lots of bikes, but not until the '09R was it something that had to be addressed. When your 4 year old daughter with a bedroom right over the garage comes downstairs asking what that 'yucky' smell is, Cali Can time! Mike | ||

I had my bike in the shop for the fuel leak. Bought the bike in Mar. 08. Just started having fuel on my garage floor. The dealer ordered a new check valve. They seemed to think it shouldn't leak and could be a problem. They even offered a loaner until the part comes in. | ||

Similarly . . . when 5,000 bikes are made and ONE per person reports a "design defect" it pretty much falls on deaf ears. I've seen enough of these over the years to listen very closely and ask questions. Folks . . it seems . . in many cases end up solving the symptoms rather than the problem. I'm watching that guy who says he burned his leg . . . . and forcing myself not to get involved. That'd be an easy fix. Always interesting to watch folks, how they handle their problems and how the interaction on the internet influences the pursuit of a solution, | ||

Questions folks with high temps 1 have you checked your coolant levels ? 2 Checked for bugs and assorted road grung 3 do your fans run 4 do you ride it at a bazziillion rpms after zooming around in traffic and or high speed run 5 have you changed air filter pipe ecm etc 6 have the bikes overheating been stored over the winter? I live in So fla we have high 90s to well over 100 in traffic On my 1125 the Highest temps so far are 197 this is at the end of break in so friction should be high Fuel quality can have huge impact on engine temps Solutions 1 Change fuel grade and or brand 2 Correct fuel maps for mods made 3 Clean fuel system 4 Clean Radiators and oil Coolers 5 Verify coolant and oil quanities 6 Are you using the factory oil filters over many years of ZR1 LT5 Lotus motor tuning I have found when you change things verification of performance is required. For example every one had to have the latest Super zoomer split end etc plugs. Dyno testing proved the best plug was stock non platinum. also the cheapest Platinum plugs were the answer tothe active susnpension Corvette Zr1 project It took 24 hours of shop time to find the plugs on that ride. Project died when risk managment found a blow hose could cut you limbs off. Take changes one at a time and or complete a change ecm flash to match pipe etc We can find the over heating problem we have enough bikes out there to get a sample and build a solutions list | ||

Well, I'm in Dallas, and it shure gets hot. I get a little smell, but I have never seen raw fuel from the CR. I'll keep watching, though. | ||

My bike still only has 500 mis on it, and I highest I've seen temp wise is 197, but I have the Erik Buell Racing ECM which I know helps keep it cooler. But I've burned my left calf red, like a sun burn, and now get the fuel smell big time. But I've had other bikes that have provided spot sun burns on calves, etc., so no big deal, the gas smell is a prob I do need to fix though. | ||

just over 8000 on the clock. stock exhaust. stock air filter. ebr race tune. while on a hot day (90+) for a ride over 45, the vent line will drip fuel every so often while still running. when i get back in my garage and park the bike, come back in garage, pretty overwelming odor of fuel and a size of fuel about the size of a half dollar on the ground. | ||

My 2008 is the same. Just over 8000 miles,stock exhaust,air filter,ECM and 90+ degrees here in Charlotte.Drips fuel drops when I stop,so I leave it outside the garage for about a half hour before putting it inside to help with the stink. Seems to work. | ||

Bone stock. Last week was the first time I noticed it dripping. I'd done a hour 15 minute trip down to Chicago and when I parked, it drizzled out about a 6" puddle. Air temps were about 83. This week, took it to Minneapolis. At one gas stop, I stopped to talk to another biker for a couple of minutes after filling it. Left a BIIIG puddle. Enough that it was running away in a stream. This is after about 4 hours of road running so the engine is good and hot and I'm sure the fuel is nice and cold coming out of the ground. AND I filled it pretty much up to the top since I wanted to make it the rest of the way home without another stop. Air temp was about 73. Only times I've noticed it. |
