This is my first post on the board and I tried to post this in the Old school forum but I don't think it posted so I am putting it here. This is a great source of info! I recently installed a new race ecm after installing my new V&H pipe and gutted air cleaner kit and the bike won't even start with the race ecm. I reconnected the stock ecm and the bike runs. Do you think the race ecm is defective? One other point that may be important is that when I bought the bike the original owner had almost run the bike completely out of fuel. It sputtered all the way to the gas station. Based on what I have read here it looks like the TPS needs to be reset. Could that be the problem even though it runs ok on the stock ecm? Finally is it safe to run the bike 25 miles to the dealer on the stock ecm with the pipe and air cleaner? Thanks, Skip |

By the way it is a 2000 X1 with 4600 miles if that matters. Sorry, Skip |

I have the gutted air-box, and Supertrapp IDS muffler w/ the stock ECM, so yes it is fine to run the stock ECM with your mods, you might have to do some re-sets on a couple things, to do this you must run the bike in 3rd gear at 55-60 MPH (help me out here people if i am mistaken) for about 4 miles, that re-sets a couple things on your bike for the fuel system and what not. This has happened to me too, for instance, when i didn't wait for the ECM to start the bike one time it FUBAR'd my ECM to the point that we thought my engine was messed up, but just that the ECM needed to be re-set. The race ECM should still work in the bike, but run it either rich or lean, it could be so far to the extreme that it won't start, but i would have it checked out. Did you buy the ECM from a dealer or Individual? if from a dealer, then take it in and have them check it out. and have your TPS re-set, cause with your mods, it would be a good idea even if you still use the stock ECM. These are some of the things i have had with my bike and figured it might be useful.. Adam |

Sounds like the ECM is defective it won't start at all. Put it back in and crack the throttle when you hit the starter. If it starts, milk the throttle to keep it running. If it runs w/Race ECM, install the stock unit, take it to the dealer. Install the Race ECM in the parking lot, and get them to do a TPS reset. That should take care of it. You should be ok to run w/stock ECM w/the modifications you've mentioned. It just won't be optimum. HTH, Jody S. |

No matter what you do to your bike, (besides physically moving the throttle position sensor in the throttle body or replacing the ECM) you do not need to reset the TPS. If you put a new ECM in it, then YES you will need to have the TPS reset. This does not involve touching the TPS. What it does is store an offset in the ECM. The new ECM has to be told what voltage value equates to a closed throttle. If your bike will not start with the race ECM in it but runs fine with the stock one, I would suspect that the race ECM is faulty. Your bike should start with the race ECM even though it hasn't been aligned to the TPS offset. It'll just run like crap at part throttle. |

Agreed - that race ECM is defective. That bike should start (especially by cracking the throttle a bit when turning it over), and it should also run okay. Not great until you get the TPS reset. Things I've read say that the factory ECM is way too lean, and that would only get worse with good exhaust. I wouldn't recommend leaving the stock one on.... Mike M |

My plan is just to run the bike to the dealer and let them test the race ecm. I am confident it is defective after trying it again tonight and cracking the throttle. She fires right off with the stock ecm so it has to be a problem in the race one. It seems that half the stuff you buy now a days has issues. Oh well. |
