After buying my M2L and tolerating bad weather for 3 weeks, I FINALLY get a decent weekend to shake this bike down! I took a nice run up to Bloomington and back, which is just about 100 miles. I figured this would be a good time to see what kind of gas mileage I could expect as well. So I topped the bike off, and away I went. At the end of the ride I stopped to fill up (52 MPG!), and noticed Quite a bit of Smoke coming from the right side. After closer inspection I found that the Rear Blowby hose had Melted off of it's nipple, and was dripping on to the Exhaust. It's this hose here; It Tee's into the line with the Filter: It's TIGHT between the intake & the Frame, and not a lot of AirFlow for cooling. I went to the AutoParts store and got another piece of 3/8" Transmission line, and I'm back in business. But is there something BETTER that's not going to Melt every 100 miles? Better Hose? Braided Steel line seems a Bit Extreme, but might be worth the effort/expense. Experts? |

Do the XB rockerbox conversion. Plug the breather holes with a normal bolt. The XB rocker conversion has 2 pcv valves and routes out the top of the rocker covers and into a catch can. It is a far better system than the stock set up. |

If you do the XB conversion, do you really need the catch can? Now that there are PCV valves, can't you let it drain overboard? And how much would you get? |

Ok, all the oil and splooge you have that comes out looks to me like it would come out of that filter and onto the header anyways, causing the same problem with smoking. |

I used to run the hose down to the ground, But it makes a mess under the bike and gets on the rear tire. When i drain my catch can i get a lot of water, Then the oil starts to drain after the water comes out. I drain mine every 2-3 rides. Re-breathing all that crap through the intake makes no sense to me. Why would you want to pollute the fuel charge going into intake? |

Okay, I found a Parts List to do the conversion. Does this look about right? Qty 1 17605-00YB COVER, TOP, FRONT, MACHINED $31.20 $31.20 Qty 1 17642-02A COVER, TOP, REAR, MACHINED $31.20 $31.20 Qty 2 17606-00YA GROMMET, VITON, BLACK $2.36 $4.72 Qty 2 17607-00Y PCV TURRET VALVE $7.44 $14.88 Qty 2 868A SCREW, HEX SOCKET BUTTON HEAD $3.20 $6.40 Qty 2 17353-89C GASKET, ROCKER COVER $5.24 $10.48 Qty 2 63858-49 GASKET, ROCKER BOX $0.72 $1.44 Are there "Directions" posted anywhere? I'll do some more poking around and see what I can find, but I'm still getting a Feel for this site. As for Oil & Spooge coming out of the Filter, it didn't seem to. I would "Assume" that you'd need to clean the filter on a regular basis to keep it from getting saturated, and Oozing. Beauty Day to be Buelling! |

Oh, Cool! American Sport Bike has a Kit for $224.95, but it's Polished. When I called he said that they had 5 they were putting together, but they needed to be sent out for Polishing. I asked if would sell me one unpolished. <silence> "Sure, It's $70 or $80 cheaper that way too." So! The Kit should be here by the weekend. And it contains directions that refer you to the Service Manual for details. He said the kit contains everything But a CatchCan or Breather Filter. I'll give the Breather Filter a shot. (Clean every 1K Miles!) He also mentioned that filling the Oil to the Middle of the Stick will Greatly Reduce Blowby. So, adding a Larger Filter and filling to the Middle of the stick should be interesting. Aren't Quirky Bikes Fun? |

I rebuilt my 2002 X1 with a 1250 kit, 10.5:1 pistons, and XB rocker covers. It pukes just as much as it did before. Don't know why All I ever get out of the Uly's catch can is water with a faint chemical smell to it but the X1 catch can gets a lot of white goo in it. |

Are you filling the Tank to the Top? From what I'm hearing, from the Middle of the Stick to the Full mark is a Sacrificial Offering to the BlowBy Gods... |

So what's the point of making the XB conversion if you still need to use a catch can?! |

Depending on where you route the hose you really don't need one. But i like to monitor all my oil consumption. "The point is that "I" don't have a contaminated fuel charge going into the motor" You may not care but i do. I don't want that shit going through the motor. And if you do any track days the catch can is required! |

I have an S1 with stock rocker boxes, and the breathers are teed to a filter under the carb, not a bit of blowby, My S3 which I did the XB rocker boxs to try to prevent blowby still seems to have about the same pre XB rockers, so I use a vented catch can as well. |

I'm not sure if I've been had here. Can someone please confirm something for me? I just bought some XB rockerbox covers advertised as part numbers 17605-00YB & 17642-02A. When I look at the inside of the cover, I see 17604-00YB on both covers, and on the top of the cover in the center each one has a 1 on it. I thought that that number indicated the cylinder that it was supposed to be installed on. Did I get the wrong parts? Despite, what I think is the part number, they both look like they are different (the breather hole is in a different spot on each). Thanks

Those look to me like the right ones, The right side one is for the front. The left is the rear cover. On the front one depending on what bike you do need to grind the front cover a teeny bit to clear the front motor mount. I used a hack saw to remove the extra material on mine as that was the only tool i had to do the job. |

Are there any alternatives to the Buell OEM gromets and PCV valves? I can't seem to find them online and don't have access to a Buell dealer near by. I guess I could go to NAPA and find something that works. Has anyone done this, with the XB rocker covers? |

Duceater, you can go to a Schuck's as they have an assortment of grommets that looked like they would work-they have a vast array of goodies like that and more-you'd be surprised as to what they have there to help you out .I've gotten goodies there over the years for various projects with great success. |

I looked around at the various autoparts stores in my area and couldn't find anything that was quite right. I ended up getting the parts from American Sport Bike. Thanks! |

Enjoying Mine! I ran the hose out the Front of the engine into a Breather Filter. Sits below Fork Tree. I pinched a RB Gasket putting it back together. I'll swap that out this weekend, and (Hopefully!) have my 1st Upgrade in the books. 999,999 to go! |

They one on the right is the REAR, not the front. The breathers go to the high part of the head. I'll have to post pictures of what I did for my S2. Basically ran the breather from the front past the rear, T'd the rear into the line and ran it down in front of the swing arm. On the bottom of the left side of the swing arm, I fabricated a hard line out of 3/8" brake line that runs along the bottom of the swing arm. It ends just before the end of the arm. Any spooge drips out of the tube away from the rear wheel. Even though the S2 swing arm is square tube, it would work the same for the cast swing arm. I'm going to do the same thing on my M2 when I put it back together. Brad |

Brad, Pix? Sounds clean. Also, Ratbuell had some pcv clearance issues with his S2 tank, so I believe he put in 2 rear covers... so the front pcv is not in the highest position, but I'm betting it's working fine, and it clears the tank better. |
