Due to the rounded profiles, sportbike tires need the carcass to flex to achieve an acceptable contact patch. Too much PSI, reduces flex which means a smaller contact patch & reduced grip. Try rear braking with the rear at 42 vs. 36, the difference is noticeable. Less PSI will give more grip (unless really low), but will cause the tire run hotter (increased flex) and will reduce tire life. Other things can affect flex, like bike weight, rider weight, suspension setup, passenger, etc. On the street, I would stay within 1 or 2 pounds of the tire mfg's recommendations. |

Jdugger, I thought all of my hard acceleration, occasional wheelies, and not-exactly-right rev-matched downshifts were responsible for me getting 2400 miles out of my rear Corsa III. By which I mean ONLY 2400 miles, not "wow, I got a lot of life out of that tire!". I'm sure it's certainly possible to ride a Corsa III to an even earlier death, but I was hardly kind to the tire. Now if you wanted to make the mileage/stator argument for people getting 5000 miles out of a Corsa III, I might be inclined to agree. LOL |

Hard cornering tears up tires faster than anything I know other than burnouts. I have a whole club full of guys I know on all kinds of different bikes from R1s, to Ducati, to Buells, to KTM Motards. In the Canyons (NW Arkansas), we are *all* about 800-1100 miles out of tires like the 2CT and CorsaIII. Frankly, the consistency we get across such a wide range of bike types and tire brands (all "sport" tires, though) is kind of amazing if you ask me. Our riding style is to "set a pace" and keep it -- not haul ass in the straights and park the corners. We don't do a lot of braking or crazy hard acceleration. Just ride. Of course, on the track, if you get 300 miles out of the tire that's fantastic! And, the center will still look brand new! So, 2400 miles out of a CorsaIII is a *lot* in my opinion. |

this is a horrible subject, and i hope the creator wasnt seriously looking for a straight answer. tire pressure depends on what tire youre running, where youre running it at, what youre doing with your bike. my track tires and rims run a different PSI than my street tires/rims. my track tires run different PSI's depending on the track conditions- youve gotta change them every day when you show up for the most part... and i went from michelins back to pirelli race tires... completely different AGAIN! and please please lets not turn this into another 'how come i dont get much mileage out of my tires' thread... you bought a high performance machine with high performance tires recommended from the factory. if you want to sacrifice some traction for longevity, buy a tire designed for high mileage... the tires that were designed to go on the bikes will last 3k miles and thats about it. be happy that you arent running track tires.... that last 4 track days (if youre lucky).. and thats equal to about 800 miles |
