Hello all. Here is my RS1200, unsure of the year. Was told 1993, but not sure. Has been in the family since I was a kid (now 24) and was my first motorcycle. Lucky I know. Bike has 16K miles, and needs a good amount of TLC. Last 2# of VIN 04 It is a 5 speed, single front brake caliper. Can anyone give me any info on this bike, or how to figure out the year? Be good to that bike, it is quite rare. The year should be in the V.I.N. It is one of the later ones I think because of the inverted forks. |

Hmmm, oil temp gauge, but RS tail? If you bought it new it might have an interesting history. It is a 92 or 93, I think. 2 piece front fairing. They changed from upside up to upside down in 91 and to the 2 piece fairing in 92... I think. Send the VIN to Court and he will tell you everything about it should he ever get to your email :-) |

You've got some nice motorcycle history. Don't alter it. Keep it covered when not using it, except to drool over or ride. Don't wash it all the time with regular water, use Mequiers Quick Detail from now on or after a ride. |

Interesting. There were (and I'm working from memory here) something like 18 bikes scheduled for 1993. Only a few (I think it was 6, but will have to check my files and audio tapes - yeah, I recorded a 2 hour interview with the guy who had tons of info) were built and sold. This bike prompts a few questions. As Cornel mentioned the oil temp gauge (we still have plenty left) with the "girl friend saver" seat was not stock. BUT . . about that time there were some bikes that ended up with BOTH tail sections. I suspect there may be a single seat hiding out somewhere for this bike, I'd have to check the build files. The critical parts of the bike appear intact and there are a couple folks capable of returning it to factory new condition without much problem. Selling at this time would be poor timing as they've been going fairly cheaply. This one strikes a chord with me as it's nearly identical to my 1990 with the front caliper, front forks and, although I can't see, I'd bet it has coated brake lines. First sport bike to have them from the factory. New example and for goodness sake . . . if you are going to do something with it . . RIDE it. I rode mine everywhere . . delivered pay checks to construction jobs every Thursday and wandered everywhere I could. It has the exact same geometry as the S2 and the S1 but will ride completely differently. The steering will be "slower" but rock solid and a damn pleasing ride. It's really quite amazing. |

wow. I would preserve it exactly as it sits, and enjoy the hell out of it. No restoration, no nothing outside of required maintenance work. Your family is the original owner, so just....preserve it. Don't try to over-restore it, that'll kill the nuance. As Court said...just RIDE it (and make the rest of us jealous!). |

Once you "restore" a bike, it is no longer "original." Clean it and take care of it. Same family since new? Gather as much paperwork as you can and write up the history of ownership. Lucky young man. |

Any estimate to what it's worth to the right person? Considering selling it, if worse comes to worse.. Not sure who the bike was purchased by, but I know it went back and forth between my step-dad and his buddy.. And it's hard to ride it when I have this beast to ride:

I'm in the midst of sorting thru a '90 that has a number of original-owner mods. It's hard to tell what it came with from the factory and what was an add-on. Mine has an RSS tail, but it also came with the original RS tail hardware, so be assured yours wasn't involved in a swap...at least involving mine! I also have a broke '92...same situation: Mods have been made but I'm not sure what was/is stock. Being that yours has been in the family it might be easier to track down. Re; Values: Both are recent purchases (within the last 18 months). PM me if you'd like to know what I paid. I'm not sure if I done good or was stupid in love and would rather not publicly risk the latter! |
