Riding home this afternoon from an experienced rider course (recommended btw), on the freeway at about 115 km/h (71 mph), 5th gear. I roll on the throttle to accelerate away from a potential danger zone, and all I get is engine noise, with a delayed acceleration. It did accelerate, but only after a couple of seconds... For a split second, I figured "Oh crap, my belt is slipping", but of course that couldn't have been it... I repeated the same scenario a couple of seconds later, and the same thing happened. Once on city streets, acceleration at slower speed and lower gears was fine. Any ideas? |

Did you get increased RPM's with the increased engine noise, like maybe you had a hot clutch slipping? |

I teach the ERC. A better course is the sport bike course. The range exercises really test your skills. Does kinda sound like a slipping clutch. |

yes, increased rpm... I was thinking clutch slipping too. Never experienced it before. Anything to worry about? |

If it was my bike, I'd change the pressure and friction plates out and put in a quart of new fluid. Try to repeat the slip tomorrow. If it slips it needs to be fixed. It will not fix itself and will wear out quickly if it is slipping. |

Would the slipping have anything (or everything) to do with all the clutch work i was doing in my ERC course yesterday? You know, a lot of slow speed maneuvers and a lot of clutch modulating... At the course they told us not to worry about the clutch life while doing our stuff - that modern clutches can easily handle it. |

Yes, you could have worn the clutch plates significantly during all the slow speed maneuvers. Do a "major clutch adjustment" following the shop manual (~15 minute job) and I'll bet that'll cure it. |

You probably got it all hot-n-bothered during the course. It *might* be better once it cools off....but do the adjustment to be safe. |

Just an update - I adjusted the clutch and changed the primary oil yesterday, and today the bike was running fantastic, no clutch slipping at all. When I adjusted the clutch, it was on the snug side, so obviously that's what was causing my issue. Thanks for the wisdom! |

For a minute there it sounded like it was "harleyitus". An increase in RPM's, with no increase in power... I'm glad to hear that wasn't your problem! |
