I've pulled the primary cover out for starter gasket replacement (it's gone). And I'd like to know what else I can do while I'm there I'm thinking I should go ahead and replace the DETENT PLATE for a new one style (33656-90A), also the main shaft seal (Not sure how much longer the old crank seal is going to last). But I'm not sure about the DETENT PLATE "NEW STYLE". I read the old OEM one was larger and engaged the follower better, but it had ambiguous lobe points. The new one had better defined lobe points, but was a little smaller and didn't engage the follower as well. Actually my shifter is smooth , the gears engaging well, not hard to find neutral nor false neutrals nor clunky shifting (still the old detent plate in) Please can someone tell me the pros and cons about the new detent plate. It worth the upgrade? So it's just a better design?....... Does anyone have any suggestions..... Any hints or tips would be gratefully appreciated!. |

Do you mind going in there at some future point when/if your shifts start giving you issues? If you aren't bothered by opening things up later, and your shifts are all good now, then leave it for now and get the bike back on the road sooner. It's not like a must-do upgrade like the primary tensioner. |

You could take the "grenade plate" out of the clutch while you're in there, assuming you haven't already. (Message edited by natexlh1000 on May 28, 2010) |

+1 on taking it out and putting in the additional plates to improve it. Just like buellistic says to. |

If you do the "grenade plate" fix, I'd suggest you replace ALL the plates to prevent the amount of squealing. Also, the clutch WILL feel different - your clutch engagement span will be much smaller. With regards to detent plate - if you're happy with it then leave it alone. I switched to the Baker smooth shift kit which works great for me for track days. |
