If anybody has advice on this, I'll take it. My 2001 S3T's speedometer quit working today. It still lights up and the odometer comes on, but the needle quit moving and the odometer quit accumulating miles. I checked for obvious loose connections and did not find any. Is the speed sensor a common issue or is it more likely the speedometer unit?

Any help would be appreciated.

More likely the sensor than the speedo itself.

First, pull the sensor out and clean it, reinstall and see if that works. Sometimes that's all it is.

That would be better cuz I'm assuming the sensor is much cheaper.

99% of the time it is the sensor.

The new model sensor for the tubers has a regulator built in. If you end up with a sensor that doesn't, put a 5v regulator inline with it. Buell fixed this in 2004 by supplying the sensor with 5v regulated output from the ECM instead of 12v unregulated.

Ditto on the sensor. The Buell version became so cheap that I don't think it's worth the labor to put your own regulator in line. You'll spend more time at the parts counter than you will swapping it out as well. I might have a spare...

So enlighten me...if I have a '99 that had a speed sensor go bad, leaving me stranded at a gas station, miss out on a days ride and have to get a lift. Will a replacement have the regulator already in-line?

I can't see how the speedo sensor would leave you stranded. You just don't know how fast you're going or how many miles you've gone, as I recall the failure.
"Stranded at a gas station" sounds more like one of the safety switches (clutch/kickstand). But yes, the regulator would be in-line.

Well, I'll tell you...

Mine shorted out on me on the freeway, blowing my ignition fuse. Cost me $500 to have that diagnosed.

The dealer was just as surprised as I was to find that unplugging the speed sensor fixed the ignition short.

This was after cutting apart my wiring harness.

Then they spent an hour trying to figure out why my turn signals weren't working any longer...until I pointed out that they forgot to plug the flasher back in...at $120 an hour...they had two techs working on it. They also didn't honor my request to take an hour of labor off the bill, since the time spent was due to their own negligence.

There was a replacement speed sensor manufactured that is called for in the following models:

All tubers with electronic speed sensors.

2003 XB9 models.

With the XB12, starting in 2004, they fixed it by supplying the sensor with 5v regulated.

Make sure you get the regulated sensor. I'm not sure whether they used the same sensor in the 2004+ models. Easy enough to find out at the parts counter though, or I'm sure Al at American Sport Bike can tell you.

Me, I'm still running an unregulated sensor with an external regulator. Still works after many years.

For some time now and from time to time my speedometer not reads the current speed and just don't know how fast I'm going. Just it happens on high speeds and very often when I go at 120 Mph in fifth gear and at 6.300 rpm my speedo sometimes reads 120Mph and sometimes 140mph. Also the needle fall from 120 Mph to 100 Mph and then quickly raises up to 120.

I tried to fix it taking the sensor out and cleaning the metal shavings off and it didn't help at all.

I Swapped speedometer unit and it made no change.

Installed for a new one P/N 74431-01B and it still doing the same thing. Everything continues as before in my speedo.

I don't know what is going on.......

Anyone know what this might be or things to check?. I'm running out of ideas.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I went ahead and bought a sensor from the H-D dealer for $55. Put it in and everything works like it should.

Sorry, been out of town.

Yeah, what Hootowl said. Seems that the speed sensor is fed through the ECM and if the speed sensor fails it acts as a kill switch. I literally spent days tracing wires and since it hadn't been that long since I rebuilt it with a 1250 kit (amongst other things) I replaced the cam position sensor and bought a coil to no avail. Then someone on here mentioned the speed sensor, I unplugged it and after a couple of tries it fired right up and I still haven't replaced it. Need to get on that...sometime.
