i posted a question about XB triples on a tuber and someone posted a picture of a spacer they made. I have looked and cant seem to find that post i made or the picture. The search function and layout of this forum is horrible. When is it ever going to be updated?

anyways.... could you post the picture again or send me an email? saleenlimited@yahoo.com

I designed and built a prototype of what i want to make but i made the spacer part 1/2" thick to move the bearing race down.... but it seems to much and i cant go any less.

thanks

? All you gotta do is press out the XB steering stem and press in a stem from a tuber or '82-'03 XL. Most shops can do it in about 2 min.

That's how all the guys I've seen have done it. PuddlePirate put an XB frontend on his XL, which has the same stem as a tuber, by swapping the stem. I can verify that the tubers and XLs have the same stem because I bolted an S2 frontend to my old XL no problem.

damn.. yes... haha. Thanks Bened. I looked both on here and that site and for some reason couldnt find it.

I made an RP spacer last night to move the bearing race down. It works perfect except the spacer is at 0.500 thickness and i can make it any less. It needs to be around 0.300.

Any '82-'03 Sporty. I used to have a spare stem in the closet but not any more.

Ross, the S1 stem was about 1/4" longer or so than the stock one on my XL (going from memory). It wasn't enough to make much of a difference on the XL steering neck anyway.

Pressing in a new stem is going to be much easier than making a spacer.

im interested in doing this. only because the front of my bike is a little low and id like to be able to slide the fork tubes down in the tripples a little more. so the x1 stem presses into the xb tripple... are all the xb tripples the same? is there a specific year that will fit? thanks!

to my knowledge the 03 and 04 XB bikes have the 54mm which is what you and I are using to fit the X1 triples... In 05 they went to a 56 or larger. So you should be looking for a 03/04 XB S triple if you are going to stick with your bold on handlebars.

Ill know more then i put the bearing race back in the next tonight and bolt it on. A problem i see is the top X1 bolt. the head is to large to fit into the countersink on the XB upper, so I am probably looking at finding an allen head bolt for that.

anyone have any ideas what others have used?

Why wouldn't the XB bolt work? Different thread pitch?

did the xb triples allow you to get the front end back to stock height?

update-

Just got some time to try the triple... with the X1 stem in the XB triple, the stem is now to short!

The X1 and XB triples are slightly different thickness, but the X1 has a counterbore where the stem presses into making the stem longer once installed. I just calculated it out and I need to counterbore into the bottom of the XB triple by 0.277" to make it all add up to the X1. It really looks like I need more then 0.277" but nothing was tight so that will probably make it work. Im going to press the stem out in the morning and mill it.

The X1 stem has an internal thread and uses a bolt, the XB stem has external treads and uses a nut. Since i am counterboring the lower, i could open the diameter up on the upper factory counterbore some to allow the head of the X1 bolt to fit.

Nate- Not sure yet, but as far as its looking, the answer is yes!

Another problem with the XB upper triple (which i knew) is, its hitting a part on the X1 neck. I guess others have cut this part off the frame but i dont want to do that so I am going to mill the triple instead. Ill post pics tomorrow.

Everytime i change one thing 5 more have to be changed... lol, but i was expecting it and just cant wait to get finished.

Ok cool. Can you confirm that it's the 54mm triples that are needed? You mentioned they come in the 03-04 xb12s, would it be the same size in the same year 9's and or firebolts??

Machined both the upper and lower tonight.

I opened the upper counterbore up to allow the use of the factory X1 bolt and counterbored the lower to make the X1 shaft correct factory length when pressed in. Didnt get a chance to press it back in though... ill do that tomorrow. Looks like it is going to work perfect!

Pressed the X1 stem back in and the XB triple bolts on like factory now!... the last problem is the mount for the headlight... hits the frame. I milled a slit in it that i was hoping would clear but dont want to cut my frame. So i think i am just going to cut off the lower bolt mount.

Upper, Machined to allow the X1 bolt head to fit.

Powdercoated and bolts on like factory.
