It ended up that my 1-year old battery was toast. So I got a new one. Starts up with ALMOST no problems. When I hit the starter it will do about 1/4 - 1/2 crank, then bog way down before she cranks at full speed. I remember seeing a picture in a thread (can't remember which one it was) but the picture was of what I believe to be about 8 electromagnets that do the cranking. One of them was completely fried. The post that went along with the picture stated something like "I took apart my starter and look what I found". Could this be causing my sluggishness during starting? PLEASE HELP! It doesn't seem to be cranking like new battery should. | ||

Is it possible that the sluggishness is during cylinder compression? Since the V-twin isn't a continuous volume engine, compare to an inline-4. Could this be what I'm experiencing? | ||

I replaced my battery recently, everytime I tryed to start it the bike 2005 XB9SX made clicking sounds, which usually means a bad battery. The new battery definitely helped, but it still occasionally does the clicking no starting/cranking if I don't ride long enough, I wonder if my starter is getting weezy? | ||

That's what made me replace my battery this weekend. My "old" battery was only 14 months old. Took it in to get tested and they said there was no saving it. | ||

is it charging? Starter first peak on a sportster motor tweaked as much as these are is quite allot so sometimes especially when hot it may do that. a.) check charging and connections make sure you have a good ground b.) you can also play with timing that may help but a clicking starter while cranking is low voltage. c.) if it clicks 1 time and nothing check starter relay and starter. note: to test charging start bike and put a volt meter to the terminals check voltage while running should be at or better than 13V note: to check stator if not charging take front belt gaurd off disconnect 77 pin connecter with thick black and red wire going to it( check connections if shyty clean and recheck charging) if not take multileter set to sound or continuity diconnect pin again place black wire on a suitable ground place red on the black wire in 77 pin then do the same to the red wire(red to red) if it sings or there is continuity on either one STATOR is bad if not VR is bad If everything is working and it is still doing that clicking thing you can try making the cables thicker so they hold or pass more current but it is probably a poor battery. I think the pic you refer to was not a starter it was a stator that had a fried section. | ||

That makes sense now. Thanx Ourdee. BTW, the new battery has been good so far. No more sluggishness on start-up. Must have just gotten a bad battery. Too bad it was 2 months past the 12-month warranty. |
