Well, looks like my 05 XB's kickstand is coming loose. I noticed it was leaning a bit more than normal. So, I took a look and found that the bolt is loose. Yes, this is the original kickstand setup. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to replace the bolt or do I have to order a whole new setup? If I do need a new setup, what's the part #? | ||

I found my 05 XB leaned way over one day due to the bolt breaking. You need to replace the bolt with a sturdy pin you can buy at the dealership, they should be able to look it up for you since I think it was a recall thing. | ||

Far as I know the only thing the dealership can offer is a new kickstand now. Anyone know if you can remove the bolt and replace it with a new one say from ACE or something? Or am I better off just getting the $60 new stand and if so, what's the part #? | ||

Some time ago, we had this discussion. It can be replaced with a bolt, and sleeve, from Ace, but the "s" bracket must be flipped. Mine is getting a little wobbly too. I'm gonna make a whole new bolt. Try the search function. There IS a pic on here somewhere that shows how to use a regular bolt. | ||

If it takes a new kickstand to also use the sturdy pin then I'd do that, I can't remember, maybe I did have to buy a new kickstand too. The advantage of a solid pin is its stronger than a bolt that is threaded which is weaker for shear stress. If you replace with only a bolt you'll eventually have the problem again, a bolt with a sleeve is better but a solid pin is best. | ||

Maybe a shear bolt. Also known as a shoulder bolt. Available in a grade 5 or 8. I will look at mine when I replace the front isolator.  | ||

Just remember that the higher the grade of the bolt, the easier it is to break with lateral force...the lower grade bolt will bend before it breaks. | ||

Gunit: A shear bolt is not a shoulder bolt. Don't use a shear bolt on the kickstand. Not so fast Fast. Common hardware store grade eight fasteners will have higher ksi ratings for tension and shear than a grade five and both are ductile after the ultimate strength is reached. There are brittle materials that will fail without any plastic deformation if the ultimate ksi rating is exceeded. A grade 8 is the preferable for the kickstand. chris | ||

Well for sure the other advantage of buying the new kickstand with the pin setup is it was overall a larger diameter than the bolt it replaced, further increasing its strength over a bolt. Seems like one day you may find your bike has fallen over then you'll be eventually buying the new kickstand and pin- plus you'll be buying a new mirror and whatever else gets scratched up when it falls over completely. My bike looked fine when I walked away from it, came back an hour later and it was leaned over as far as it possibly could without falling down, but that easily could've happened. Might as well do it right and never have to worry about it again rather than trying to save a few bucks on a band-aid fix. | ||

I didn't mention any particular grade of bolt did i?  There are a lot of "fake" chinese bolts on the market....I recently saw "Grade 8" bolts fail in deformation without a hint of trying to bend first...as it turned out, they were fakes that somone had found a fantastic deal on.. | ||

Ok so I just bought the suspension and kickstand off of another BadWebbers '04 XB9SL. What is the "tell tale" sign that it needs to be upgraded? That it has a bolt? The year of the bike it came off of? How do I know it's ok? | ||

It wouldn't make a difference if you did Fast. The knockoffs are very ductile. chris | ||

I personally would get the new kickstand with the pin/clip. My bike lives on its kickstand most of the time and the difference in the diameter and strength of the "pin" was significant when I compared the stock '03 setup with the new kickstand. | ||

The old style of kickstand pivot bolt had a threaded 1/4x20 shaft coming out the bottom and threads into the kickstand mount. The new design has a 1/2" shoulder the entire length and an "E" clip at the bottom to hold it in place. As a temporary fix until you can get the new design, you can drill and tap a 1/4x20 hole into the bottom of the old style pivot and install a grade 8 bolt to hold the pivot pin in place. The new design is superior and cheap insurance for the price of the kickstand kit.   | ||

My XB has been leaning over more than my other bikes, and It looks like it is leaning more than other XB's. I am not sure what I would need to do to fix this, I *think* I already got the upgraded stand, the previous owner mentioned something about it. My bike is an 06.   | ||

That looks like the old design. You can get the upgraded one from American Sport Bike or your dealership. |
