Are motorcycles exempt from having to be OBDII compliant ? I was under the impression that ALL vehicles manufactured after 96 had to have the diagnostic port available and standardized. I have an Actron scanner that reads all kinds of engine functions on our cars, including TPS and timing. It also resets fault codes. Neat tool to have, although my wife really thinks I'm a geek when I plug this in to the dash. |

Every one I've seen has a diagnostic port (4-pin, this applies to Harleys, Buells, and a Suzuki that I've personally seen), but it differs from the Automotive version (16-pin). No idea if the codes are standardized though, or if yoyu can get a 'reader' for them. |

Maybe a different processor on bikes, trying to remember but my old S10(90,truck) was 4 or 5 pin. Less to monitor on a bike, all the evaporative stuff doesn't apply on a bike, at least not yet. |

I was reading another post about a guy who wanted to check the timing on an Xb series bike and I thought I can do that on my cars with the scanner I have, there should be one for the bikes too. |

Yeah, it's a $15 jumper! You can use a piece of wire and jam it into the two pins (1 and 2, I think, but you can see which ones in the photo), and then when you turn the key to the run position (without starting it), the check engine light will flash any stored codes. The service manual lists this procedure, as well as the code list. It even lists the part numbers for the pins and plug body if you wanted to build your own... Seems pretty pricey for what it actually is... Steve. |

Not seems, IS. Ridiculous what people will pay for. Anyone with enough mechanical savvy to be interested in checking error codes themselves should also be bright enough to know how to short wires. |

The cost has more to do with the plug that its packaged in. It's not something you can just walk into Radiosnak and just get. Kind of gives it that "professional" look for the tool box. |

I agree with Wycked. If you have ever priced those connector you will find that some are cheap and some are not. I am not saying that you could not put one together for less than $15 dollars, they have to make a profit ya know. I think it is the same plug used on my S3, I just use a piece of wire. |

Oh, you can get them a HELLUVA lot cheaper than even a $5 price tag would account for... ...you just gotta know the right people. LOL Never had to check any error codes on my XB, if I do, maybe I'll look into getting a handful of the appropriate connectors/terminals. Hell, I might already have the right terminals in my garage. |

I really didn't mean the jumper thing for diagnostics but a true scanner that monitors engine functions like timing, tps, load, etc... I was just thinking you guys with XBs could use something like that instead of the plug in the engine thing for checking timing and resetting tps. |

Well, yeah...but it ain't gonna happen anytime soon. In the meantime we have a way to diagnose but not necessarily fix, and get to deal with HD's pathetic dealer network to get necessary routine manintenance done. |

I am pretty sure you can check the timing without the equipment, using a voltmeter and finding tdc the old fashion way. |

Timing is easy, look here But I wanna be able to do it all, all by myself. I hope someone comes up with something soon. |

You can make a jumper for getting the fault codes with 2 small crocodile clips and 4" of wire, works well. |
