So after looking for over a year I finally purchased one last night. Its a 2003 lightning with 2200 miles. The bike has been stored for 2 years so I talked him down to $2800. The bike ran ok at his place and I even turned it off and restarted it a couple times and revved it up. I was thinking 2 year old gas would not make it run the best. After getting it home and off the truck now it will not start im guessing the gas again... Is there a easy way to drain the tank down?

Gotta pull the fuel filter (I think) to drain the fuel. Or start sucking...

add some fuel stabil, it will bring the gas back to life, two years insnt so bad. just go easy on it for a while...

First,you fouled the front cylinder plug. As stated you cannot rev these engines and then shut them down. Second... drain the gas or siphon as much out as possible and put fresh in.

Put in 92 or 93 octane for best results.

You don't have to pull the pump just take off the back wheel and
take out the either screw from the fuel pump all the fuel will come out. Make sure to disconnect the fuel pump electronics.
Btw make sure your ready to catch all that gas.lol
Unfortunately siphon does not work well because of internal baffles.

I just pulled the left side rider peg bracket to get to the drain plug, and used a sheet of aluminum foil to make a funnel/slide to catch the gas coming out and direct it to the gas can.

Hey Brad nice score!

BTW , if anyone knows is there a way to reuse or refurbish that drain plug?

FSM wants to see it replaced but iirc @ $30 a pop , I think turning the bike upside down is a viable action, ok or siphon ,fresh plus seafoam or whatnot........ =)

I think you may be able to jumper the fuel pump to on, and let it run into a suitable can. Pull the high pressure hose off the fuel rail (make sure the pressure has dropped before doing this) then locate the fuel pump relay and pull it. Jumper the two contacts needed to run the pump and let it drain. Alternate might be to simply turn the bike to run with key and switch, not sure if it will continue to run so you might need to make the jumper.

Now if you choose to run the fuel pump, might as well dump a few ounces of SeaFoam in the tank first to clean out the fuel pump and tank. Just remember that this is fuel, so keep a decent fire extinguisher handy and try to kill the pump at the first sign of trouble so you don't add additional fuel to a fire or spill.

Not sure how many gallons per hour we are talking, but I would expect a long time which might require an additional power source like a good boost/charger plugged into the wall.

haha nice try...

for a oil change what should i use in the swingarm and primary? i have seen 20w50 for the engine and gear oil 75w90 for the primary but have seen people using 20w50 in both. Im confused...

For primary fluid, formula+ or syn3. Some say Mobil 1 75-90 but dunno about that one.

I put Mobil 1 V-Twin in both, so far so good.

FYI Race cans are illegal in probably every state since they are not EPA certified for road use. Hopefully they have the race ECM installed and took a little time to tune it.

I would worry less about the rubber and more about getting it running. Probably better put new plugs in there and drain the fuel before trying to start it again. Might be worth getting it registered and plates so you can take it for a small journey next time you do get it started.

run mbile 1 v twin oil in primary and engine 20w-50w. Autozone has it cheap , and advance auto has the plugs for the buell cheap champions work great.

I would suggest going straight to the Iridium plugs. I have yet to foul them even when doing all the stuff everyone says not to do.

I fouled a pair of Iridium plugs. Temps below 30. Battery was probably a little low. But they did foul bad enough I had to pull them.

You really should ride the bike to get it up to temp before changing oil. Letting it sit and run..... just really not the same.

Hmmm... I idle mine all the time in the garage, watched it smoke for about 15 minutes after doing the header wrap. Must have a lean idle setting that I'll probably need to fix, could be the 10% alcohol fuel doing it too.

the oil will be another day its next to impossible to find 20w50 at the auto part stores around here... im going to try a couple shops around here if not i know my dad has some royal purple...

Advance auto says they have the Mobil 1 V-Twin at three stores:
In Stock - 5737 N DIXIE DR Map it
In Stock - 3969 SALEM AVE. Map it
In Stock - 434 WOODMAN DRIVE Map it


It's $10.00 a quart which is not really great since you'll need 4 quarts for a complete change. Autozone should also be able to look and see where they have it near you, probably the same $10 each.

Also you might look around for Rotella 6T (or T6) which is a full synthetic and Walmart recently got this "new" formulation in for about $20-$25 per gallon. If they had this in stock when I changed the oil I probably would have used it in mine.

Everyone says to stay away from the Fram filters.

yeah i saw the v-twin oil, really didnt fell like spending that much. There is a part store local that has a bunch of royal purple products im calling today for some 20w50. Do you guys just use the car oil?

And dont worry I have never used a fram filter I got the supertech.

well i got all the gas out my undoing the drain plug on the fuel pump. i got some new spark plugs in.... what a pain in the butt there are really buried in there. But it starts and runs just the idle is really low 700-800 i would say. where is the adjustment for that?
