I managed to revive her P3 after it sat idle for 5 years. Panic set in when i could not get the beast to fire off last night. But this morning I solved the problem and was able to ride her Blast up out of the shop and park it with the rest of the Buells. The kids are finally old enough (3 and 6) that Mama is ready to ride again. And Papa is feeling pretty good too, cause when Mama's happy, everybody's happy. And the best part of the story for me is not buying anything from Harley to get it done. God love Advance Auto Parts for having an AGM battery for a Buell Blast in stock. The rest was just grunt work...pulling and purging the fuel tank...rebuilding the carb...new DOT4 in the brake system...pulling the side cover to let out a cup of water, then a quart of oil...Novus 2 and S100 on the plastics...air up the tires. About 20 hours or so and her old P3 is running and looking good again.

Ditch the Dunlops if you love her, otherwise up your insurance. EZ |

I hear that. Found the Pirelli MT 75s at Motorcycle Superstore. Just need to see the Wife actually riding the beast before I order them. Going to change out das boot in hopes that the Cold start dysfunction is a small airleak. Any info on the electric enrichener? Is there some way to see if it's working correctly? I'm thinking maybe some tiny air passage or fuel passage is still clogged. I could also use some help trying to make the speedometer work. I assume it has an electronic pickup somewhere. Any ideas? The odometer reads (but does not change) and the Oil and Neutral idiot lights work but no road speed is indicated. (Message edited by MountainStorm on May 10, 2010) |

Its the speedo sensor above and behind the front pulley - replace and the dash will work. Early ones went south, just a matter of time. Sounds like a partially clogged primary 45 jet, as well as an old boot. If the boot is fresh and replaced and jet blown out well, and it still does that, then I would try unhooking the enrichner/auto-choke, mark exactly its hook up, and see what happens - may need a new one, may need a new one, but if nothing changes hook back up. The Pirelli are inexpensive, put them on and she'll actually enjoy riding the bike a lot more from the get go - the Dunlop suck that badly. EZ |

Thanks for the advice. If I'm lucky the Buell shop will have the boot in stock so I can give that try today. But I bet I'll have to order that speedo sensor. |

You can get Dan's Boot on Ebay, though it costs a bit more, never having to worry about your intake except to replace the rubber boot part every 3 or 4 years is great peace of mind. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buell-Blast-Custom- Intake-Boot-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem1e5be345c0 QQitemZ130390640064QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAcce ssories EZ |

I actually looked at all 837 Buell Blast related listings the other night so I did take note of that nice piece but for $50 plus shipping I will have to hold off. This is a scrape by with what I can scratch up sort of resto. I should have the parts I need to finish the work next week. I had to break down and order stuff from the local Buell shop. That darn speedo sensor is $60 and the front brake system is up around $250 so I still get $300 plus extracted from my play fund...oh well, she's worth it. Thanks again |

Well I finally had a chance to finish the restoration and now the Blast is back to normal. The new carb/manifold coupling seems to be making a difference in the cold start. Still have to try it after sitting for several hours just to make sure. Speedo sensor installed and that was indeed the right part to replace to get the gauge working. Completely new hydraulics on the front brake (rotor was fine) and that's it. Bled the brakes using a large syringe to draw fluid through the new parts and lift the air up and out of the lines. Way faster than pumping the lever a bazillion times. Used hardly any fluid to get it bled out too. Now it's ready for inspection and some updated tags. I took it for a little spin on a backroad and found a little leak around shift bearing in the side cover. I think the oil seal pressed into the cover might have just dry rotted. But until it becomes a real problem I'm leaving it alone. Need to see how much the Wife uses the bike first before I keep wrenching and spending. Thanks for your help EZ |
