I only have 430 miles on a 2009 Uly and noticed in the past couple days it was being very hesitant while cold. Today it was in the lower 40s and the bike was unrideable. It seems that the bike is running rich and fowling the spark plugs. If it's warmer tomorrow I'm going to take it down the road and try to clear them out, but that doesn't fix the fueling issue. Is this a known issue on the Uly? Is there an updated fuel mapping that will fix the problem? | ||

Had a similar problem with mine last fall when I bought mine. It had H-D 50W, fine for summer, but the bike got very grumpy as fall progressed. Made sure they put in 20W-50 at the 1k and the bike started fine down to 30ish, and okay down to around 20. Didn't get any colder here in Memphis, so didn't find that lower limit. | ||

1. NO SHORT RIDES. If you start it, ride (the snot out of it) for at least 30 minutes. They run rich on coldstart (think carburetor on "choke"), and thin the mix once they warm up. 2. DO NOT START THE BIKE TO PULL IT INTO THE GARAGE. No start/make vroom-vroom noises/shut off, for any reason. If you're that close....it's 400lbs. Push it  And, NEVER run straight 50W oil. Syn3 in my '06, starts down to 0F and runs fine. | ||

I agree with almost everything Ratbuell said. I think 30 minutes is way overkill... I take my bike start it, put my gear on (takes a minute or two) then leave and it is warmed up enough not to cough or hesitate. A full heat cycle is really all it needs, I have ridden it < 5 miles probably close to 50 times in my 15k miles and still have stock plugs and it runs great. I worked at a dealership and the guys would start them out front, then pull them in with no warm up time and shut them off. The Harley's would take it OK minus some battery issues, but Buell's would foul plugs like crazy. We ended up having to start the Buell's a few minutes early then ride them in and shut them off. | ||

Well, Ratbuell and I ride year round, and in the winter even 30 minutes isn't enough! But yea give her a good wringing. | ||

5 miles is OK for a plug heat-cycle...but you still get a milkshake when you change your oil that way. Get it hot, keep it hot, burns the water (condensation) out of the oil. | ||

Do you get a condensation problem if the bike is garaged in an attached garage? I can see it when it's outside but figure that isn't a big issue if it is in a nice toasty spot. | ||

You get a condensation problem if you run the bike and get it *warm*, then shut it off and let it cool. If you repeat that over and over again, the heat cycle itself creates the condensation. Longer runs burn the water out of the oils. And yes, it's worse if you park outside...but it still happens if you garage your bikes. | ||

Yes I have condensation issue with a heated garage. Running with the oil cooler blocked and a rag in the left scoop helps. | ||

I have run the 50W oils with no problem, as well as straight 60W. It needs to be done by the chart in the book though. If you get a random cold morning start, you need to be easy on it until it warms up for sure. I agree though, your running rich problem is partially fouled plugs. Put in a fresh set warm it up and ride it somewhere. |
