I have an 06 XB12scg and my front brake recently began pulsating when I engage it. Originally i thought the monster rotor needed to be replaced but that seems unlikely. I heard this could be caused by brake pads or build-up of brakedust. Any past experiences with this? If so, what should I replace, and/or how do I clean the rotor? I appreciate the help.

I clean the rotor with fine steel wool. No issues again

Do a search. This problem has been reported (and fixed) HUNDREDS of times since I've been on this board.

Clean the rotor to remove the deposits, then never sit at at stop with the front brake clamped, use the rear to hold instead. The deposits get "cooked" in in place when clamped at a stop.

There are other brake pads that do not leave the same deposits- some like Lyndahl Golds (personally, I can't stand the feel of them), others like EBCs (my preference).

Like Jaimec said, use the search function and you will get lots of info!

Andy- I've always followed your suggested braking technique, and I still wound up with pulsating front brakes. I switched to Lyndal pads which seemed to improve things, but the pulsing is still there. Cleaning or a few high speed stops will improve things for a while but the pulsing always seems to come back.

I just ordered a 6mm rotor from Erik Buell Racing with a mounting kit; I'm kind of debating which pads to go back with. I'm leaning towards the EBCs.

I installed EBC pads when I installed my Galfer wave rotor and so far they have been great. The pads are not as harsh on the rotor as I thought they would be.

Sometimes a rotor is just worn out.

Thanks for input everyone. I will try cleaning the rotor this weekend to see how it turns out. After that, I will take it to the next step and get some new pads.
