The fan fuse keeps blowing out when the fan is supposed to come on, accompanied by the "check engine" light, so I assume that means that the fan has shorted. Since my 08 is just out of warranty (by about a month), I need to replace it. The dealer closest to my house has closed, so, before I take it to nearest one (now 50 mi or so away), I wonder how hard it is to replace it.

I'm somewhat handy but do not have a richly appointed toolbox. It looks like the rear shock has to be removed ... which may well be beyond the facilities I have on hand. Any suggestions before I prepare to hand over my $$ for a dealer repair?

Now that your bike is out of warranty and you're a fair ride to the nearest dealer, I would highly recommend picking up the shop manual, you'll save a ton of money and frustration.

Regarding the fan, I'd call HD customer service. If you're extra nice they may agree to cover the fan, since it's less than a month out of warranty. Worth a shot, anyway.

Great suggestion! I called and the didn't reject it out of hand. Instead, they wanted me to take it to a dealer for diagnosis before they'd even discuss it.

It is going in on Monday ...

I don't recall that I needed anything more than some sockets, a box end wrench or two and a screw driver or two to get my fan in and out. Even doing the comfort kit install wasn't anything more than a time vampire.

If they don't do it for you under warranty and quote some atrocious price, its still doable in the garage.

I do recall that someone in the archives had a great step by step rotation instruction for how to turn and twist the fan coming out and going in to keep your cussing and bloody knuckles down to a minimum. I printed it and stuck it to the bike as I was doing it and he was dead-on on how and when to turn the fan housing.

I'll see if I can find the link...

I just replaced mine last night and installed a comfort kit. When I got to the instructions in the comfort kit to install shroud, I unbolted the upper shock bolt, swung the shock out of the way and did the fan.

The big question is, how does one get the lock nut on the front ECM bolt with the comfort kit shroud in place?

"The big question is, how does one get the lock nut on the front ECM bolt with the comfort kit shroud in place?"

My comfort kit was already on the bike when I purchased it used. Later, I wanted to change out the stock ecm with the ebr one. I found that a small window had been cut in mine and then filled with a silicone material. I just removed the silicone plug, got ahold of the nut with a pair of needle nosed vicegrips and loosened it up. So, you may want to make yourself a nice little window to access it. Then either cover with duct tape or fill with some silicone sealant.

Swampy,

One guy on this forum used a magnet on his middle finger to hold the nut while he spun the bolt.

The magnet was held onto his finger by a rubber glove.

Before I read this trick I just taped the nut to the tip of my finger.

Warm up the shroud with a hair dryer and then pry open enough space to get your finger under there with the nut on it.

I drilled a hole in my shroud right next to where that nut goes. I then filled the hole with a plastic plug/cap. When I want to remove the ECM, I just pop the plug/cap, slide the wrench in and hold the bolt. When I'm done, I just snap the plug/cap back in.

I ended up drilling a hole from the side, then used a magnet to hold it in place till I got the screw started, then wedged a long screwdriver to hold it in place while tightening. It is now covered with a piece of black electrical tape.

Smpl5 I would be very interested in knowing what you found,as my bike is doing exactly the same,it comes up as Code 36 in ECM spy,and yes I need to remove the fan to check as well,I will be very interested,as I am not sure but mine blew the Keyswitch fuse on my last big ride as well, not sure if this was from running with the fan fuse blown and the check light on for about an hour in the heat.
Cheers Phil

Back to the ECM nut for a second - I see that American Sports Bike is selling Motion Pro's magnetic finger for $10.95 >> http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16092.html

I have an appointment with the dealer (Highland H/D in Somerset PA) on Tuesday (4 May). I'll let everyone know how it works out.

Your Uly is in good hands with Highland HD. They really know their stuff when it come to Buell.

So, the tech over at Highland HD found that my lifter box was leaking, which (apparently) blew oil back into the fan. I had noticed an oil leak last fall and brought it in to the (now closed) dealer. The tech at that dealer cleaned the area and could not find the source of the leak. I am guessing that the cleaning made the source of the leak obvious.

In any case, Highland HD worked with HD customer service about repairing this on the recently expired warranty. Apparently, dealers get a budget from HD for warranty repairs, and Highland agreed to use part of their warranty budget for my Uly!

They have to order a fan, so I won't get my bike back until next week.

I'm pretty confident in them. They got to the root cause pretty quickly, and they were willing to invest their warranty $$ in me/my bike. That says a lot in my book, especially given that Buells are no longer part of HD's future. They could have easily decided that Buells were not part of their future either, but they didn't!

They did have a Blast on the showroom floor ... the only Buell I saw. When we were there, they were having a clearance sale on clothing, etc., a small percentage of which had Buell logos. My wife picked up a Buell branded helmet, but nothing they had fit me.

All I have read is you just loosen that nut, and swing the ecm out of the way. Am I talking about the wrong topic, or is there a reason to remove that nut/bolt?
Thanks
