WOW Great thread. I have been gone for the weekend spending a lot of time on my XT600 getting muddy and put about 250 miles on the S2. What a great weekend. Thanks so much for all the great info and opinions. I must say I am a member of many forums dealing with everything from BMWs and Porsches to firearms to both real and scale aircraft and this forum has some of the best people on it. I am very glad to have found it. Thanks Mr. Skinner for your thoughts once again. It seems no matter what I ask you always have good info and prospective on my question. Please do not feel that I am not also grateful to everyone who posts because I am. It is just every time I post here I can be sure to get a good reply from Mr. Skinner. My feeling on keeping to bike stock is right in line with Mr. Skinners. It is up to each of us to decide how we think our bikes should be kept. Be it stock or mod. I remember reading a copy of the letter that came with the sig plates for the S2 and it asked what changes you had made on the bike. I think that sums up how Mr. Buell felt about the bikes. A man who himself could never leave things alone. My brother in law who got me hooked on Buells has a stripped S1 in his basement that he has been using to keep his CRAZY AMA race buell on the road (yes I said on the road). He offered me the heads, cams and carb off that bike to be installed on mine. As I am a machinist I would be trading machine work for the parts. Is there a big HP difference between the S2 and the S1 engine? Is the extra HP worth the work to do the parts swap? I am guessing the HP difference would come from better heads, cam profiles and carb. Am I right in this? The only part on my S2 I feel lets me down is the lack of power after years of riding jap sport bikes. I would like to correct that. Oh and when I ride with my B in law that S1 cleans my clock. To be fair to my S2 there in not much left of the stock S1 on that bike. Still more grunt would help. Thanks again guys. Sorry it took me so long to reply. |

OK Time to pipe up. I have a 96 California Buell S2T. I had lots of problems with the Quicksilver carb, one guy wouldn't ride behind me because of the gas vapor trail. I called Edelbrock and for $160 traded it in on the improved model(version 2). It has been fine now for about 5 years. No leaking, good power and good mileage (55-65mpg). The only problem I have had was a broken needle in my driveway, bike would idle perfectly but no throttle advance. Installed a new needle and it runs like new. When it wears out I will consider a Mikuni, but the Quicksilver is easy to adjust. Just one more datapoint for you... |

I should`a looked at the pic first, you have the stock roter & carrier. The prob w/Ed. carb is the slide will come apart and all the pieces will go through the motor.I like the performance of the CV but I had Zippers install a thunder-jet.For the same $ you could get a mc 42.I thunderstormed my S2 motor and am happy. The lightning motor was only slightly better because the flywheels were 4 lbs. lighter.Anyways you`ve got a beautiful bike there and if your at the U.P. S2 rally your welcom to take mine for a spin see if thats what you want, power wise. |

Triman, that is funny as my needle broke as well, took a bit to figure it out. Be aware that the Quiksilvers are known for having the inside corners of the slide break off and get ingested into motor after some time exposed to the vibes of a Buell. Seen at least 3 examples--my own being one of them. |
