I've been riding for about 2 years and everyone thinks I'm ready for the track (Summit and NJMP). Only problem is, I have Sharkskinz with custom paint I don't wanna fudge up. The import guys can get cheap chinese plastics from ebay, but seems like Buell its either Sharkskinz or Airtech, both of which are like $600+. I'm trying to figure out if any plastics from other bikes will fit so can possibly use the cheap ebay ones or the abudance of used/rashed import plastics. Does anything fit? I wanna do the track with full fairings for crash protection, but not my sharkskinz with the expensive paintjob. Would running OEM plastics with the swingarm/fork/LSL engine sliders be safe also? Or am I stuck having to get another set of sharkskinz or airtechs? Or ghetto rig some ebay import knockoffs? Can't afford another bike...although some of the salvage XBs are pretty cheap. Just pick up some ebay stock plastics if you're concerned about rashing your fairings. Anything else like you said is going to be $600+ (also Flexi Glass and Sebimoto) The only other way would be to find somebody's busted fairing (good luck) - but that's usually a HUGE project to repair, prime, paint. Think stock, think ebay. | ||

Ahhh so no other bikes plastics are even remotley capable? Thought I remember someone rigging some old ducati plastics on here...wish I could find the old link. Aite so OEM with Engine sliders, pucks and swingarm/fork sliders seem like best bet I guess. Thanks slaughter! | ||

I'm sure you can fit many different bodies on your bike, if you are willing to do a ton of work to line it all up, drill, cut, and whatever else needs to be done to make them fit. | ||

Greg_e, I would love to be able to ghetto rig some cheap ebay plastics on for the track. I love sliders but the full fairing also protects the bike a lot... learned this from my first wreck \imagelink2 Found the link, this Aussie guy here http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/394572.html?1266770315 Rigged some ducati 748 fairings on his XBR. you don't really need a fairing for a track bike, its not really going to make the xb and quicker, unless you go to bonnieville salt flats, a standard buell xb fairing is all you need. I used to race ama and wera and its easier to just keep the bike painted flat black and use a good fiberglass fairing. You'll be surprized how often you dump a track bike and its really a waste of time spending alot on a fancy paint job. If you watch actual amatuer or professional track races you will see alot of riders crash alot in the hairpin turns in infield at low speeds. Your better off investing in crash protection parts and break away pegs and lever etc. Enjoy the racing and don't worry what the bike looks like, as long as it passes the tech inspection your fine. | ||

Nightripper, I'm not worried about the paint..... I like the full fairing for the protection it adds in addition to sliders and pucks. I'm just trying to figure out if I can find a cheaper alterntive to sharkskinz or airtech... I have sharkskinz street version now and its custom painted, dont wanna track it. So seeing If i can use the 748 fairings from ebay cheap as full fairing just for the track. | ||

I'd just keep it simple. For $100 you can get all the plastics used. You can adapt almost any full fairing but the oil cooler intake might need some mods. Everything else is pretty simple. My take is to save yourself the hassle, get cheap-o stock bodywork and focus on the track day - not the bodywork. It's supposed to be fun and for sure, if you're worried about something OTHER than the task-at-hand, you'll lose a big part of the learning experience. I have a GSXR set of bodywork around somewhere that I was going to use for my SV before I wadded it up. I was going to mod it for the XB but it just wasn't worth the trouble. Bought a fairing set from Pete at Grandstand Designs. That GSXR bodywork was at a friend's place and I had him just toss it out when he moved. | ||

Sounds good.... I see planty of r6-SV-cbr used/rashed track bodyworks go for about that price on my local sportbike site... would the modding for oil be that hard? was the gixxer bodywork super complicated to adapt? I greatly appreciate all the advice yall!!!! | ||

If you're using the stock cooler - you might have to cut the bodywork to clear the airflow path leading into the scoop. Simple enough with a saw and sandpaper. BUT if that chunk of fairing leaves just the flat side of the fairing, you will have to build it up so it won't crack. Trust me, it WILL start breaking up your first session out. You could also build upper and lower fairing support brackets. Probably won't be able to use your Sharkskins. Pic shows GSXR fairing - and I kinda blacked out where you'd have to cut (possibly) - if the air flow to the cooler was blocked.  | ||

Ahhh, that doesn't look too bad. I appreciate the grahpic bro. My bodys pretty good with fairings I'mma email/print this out for him when he gets back from vacation. Brackets are just peices of thin steel right, like on my Sharkskinz... bend em and reinforce/weld the bend. Thanks!!!!! | ||

Where can I get a full set of used R plastics in black for $100? I don't even mind if they have light scratches as I want to sand them to a matte finish anyway. |
