1ST Belt broke 2ND Rear wheel bearing failure 3RD time today I think it was/is the # 77 connector on my way home from work today the engine light came on and started running like crap pulled off into the gas station and it quit. I let it set for a minute and then turned the key on and hit the starter button.... CLICK, CLICK, CLICK! The battery was dead.... got a jump and headed home I made it about 1/2 a mile and it did it again.... Called the wife, got the trailer and brought it home. I went right to Mr.77 and he is BURNT. I'll fix it and HOPE that is all that is wrong.... |

Ouch! Knock on wood I have been trouble free for the last 20k after a crap load of electrical problems at 5k. Good luck with finding a long term fix so you can enjoy riding asap. |

The more I think about the problems I have with my Ulysses, the more I wish I had never bought it. But every time I bend it into a corner I'm not thinking about that stuff... |

When I changed my belt (~ 24K miles) I took the opportunity to check that connector. The connection looked good and I left it alone. Wolfridgerider, had you ever checked it before? |

Easy fix- install the factory upgraded connector or hardwire the leads. There are many posts with good fixes for the problem. IMHO you cannot visually inspect this connector and tell if it has a problem unless it has already melted. My Uly died on me (luckily my wife was nearby with a car and jumper cables) a couple of years ago. When I finally inspected the 77 connector, it had the barest trace of a burned spot on one of the male lugs, but it wasn't charging at all. I sanded both connectors shiny, tightened the female connectors slightly using needle nose pliers, and reassembled. Later, I installed the upgraded connector. Once you get it fixed, IMMEDIATELY install a voltage monitor (see Ft_bstrd's step-by-step for a tidy install) so the next time you have an electrical problem you know you have a problem before the voltage drops low enough to strand you. |

Mark You got more out of your 77 than did I! I think I wound up soldering mine together. FWIW I don't think I applied enough wire-ties when I re-assembled as I noticed a little abrasion (lots of chafing on this bike) on one of the other wires in that mass of wiring when I went in recently ....2cents and all that... I think I have an extra set of those fat Deutsch plugs if you decide to go that route...(really needs the proper crimp tool to do it right) Ken |

I think I will be soldering mine together once I get it all apart. |

I took mine apart at around 13,500miles. It looked fine, not burned or pitted. But, being a little paranoid, I replaced it with the upgraded connector. I didn`t have the special crimp tool, so I wrapped the 2 "wings" around the wire, squeezed them with a crimp tool, and soldered them. I smeared a little anti-corrosion goop used for electrical connections, on the pins. It should be fine, but I will check it from time to time. |

I just went ahead and soldered and shrink wrapped mine when I heard about some of the issues. It also leaves more room in that cramped area under the sprocket cover. |

Been there done that Mark! My 77 connector fried around 20,000 miles and was replaced under warranty, but it is no fun being stranded. I have thought about getting the upgraded connector (anyone have the part number?), but for the last 20,000+ miles I used some dielectric grease packed inside the connector and it has been fine. |

SO is this a problem on the 09' 12X or does it already have the upgraded connector? I assume from the thread that this connector is on the right side under the belt cover or fwd sprocket cover? On my LC 1500 there has always been issues with a plug that handles the voltage from the stator ECM. Is this the same type issue on a main wire or what? I am doing 4 days in Arkansas this weekend and its gonna probably rain the whole damn trip. Is this a moisture related issue and should I go ahead and stuff some dielectric grease all over the connector now? Thanks! BDRAG |

Mark, the tender takes time to charge,it's a low amp charge that is needed for AGM battery.Keep it charging, may take 24hrs. on dead charge. |

SO is this a problem on the 09' 12X or does it already have the upgraded connector? I believe I read that 08+'s have eliminated this connector all together. Glad to hear you found it Mark, I didn't see I missed your (second) call till late. |

What battery tender do you have? A tender junior, which I use, only has "charge" and "float" modes, not "resurrect from the dead" mode. You need one of the larger, more expensive ones for that...but for those times, I have a jump box - jump start it, go for a long ride (whatever excuse I can get!), get the base charge in, *then* put it on the tender junior. |

"resurrect from the dead" LOL... that may be the problem.... I'll get the big boy out when I get home if the tender isn't green yet.... |

BDRAG- The factory changed the charging system in 08 and did away with that connector, so you have little to worry about. |

My 08 manual shows a 77 connector for the voltage regulator. It is shown as a 2-place Deutsch type connector. Is this the type of problematic connector or is this different. It looks different than some of the burned connector pictures on this site. |

I just did my 46 connector. Bike was not charging and found out the 46 connector was fried. Got it running again and now it wont maintain a TPS reset. I've had this surging problem every since i installed a D and D pipe. Got rid of the pipe and got a Spec Ops muffler and still have the surging problem.Reset TPS more times than I can count and still running like crap. I dont want to pay a Harley Stealer 100 dollars for 2 minutes on thier computor only to have them tell me nothing shows up. I was planning a trip to Mount Rushmore in July with some friends....not going to happen now because I have to use my trip money to fix the bike . This absolutley sucks!!!! |

It is a totally different connector in a totally different spot. So, no, you are not affected. |

Updated replacement regulator – part number Y1302.02A8. This regulator is supplied with Voltage regulator Connector Service kit Y1312.02A8 which is what you are after. These are Deutsch 2 pin DTP items so could be purchased from other sources if you have trouble with supply. |

So, I put it all back together last night and fired it up. It was having a hard time to stay running. It wouldn't stay on idle. I adjusted the idle. Still ran rough until it was warmed up. I had the same issue this morning. It wouldn't stay running I held the throttle open a little with the vista cruise and got it warmed up for the ride to work. It ran great on the way in. I haven't had the TPS reset for some time, so that will be on the short list of things to do. I just did the 45,000 mile service. new plugs... blah blah blah any who.... got any other ideas what it might be? |

When you battery went dead, and your connection was sick, it may have learned some bad things into the ECM. I say as long as the idle is the only problem showing up, don't fix anymore "might be" items until you take it out and flog(ride) it for about twenty miles. |

when the connector went bad on my Uly the Buell tech put the electrician's grease on it and it ran great. I forget what it was called but a good dab of that will keep it from arching when it left me stranded on the side of the road I pulled fuses for the lights and instrument cluster to give it enough juice to get it off of the highway and pop started it with a couple of good pushes which was totally scary |

I think I will clean the throttle body with some carb and choke cleaner and run some sea foam thru it. It was back firing thru the intake a good bit. |

what Vern said....do that 3600 rpm /20mile drill to get the AFV to re-set. FWIW I had a rough idle with the race pipe (and race map) but enabling 'idle closed loop enable' helped. After 400 miles, AFV remains stable at 99.9 and idle is as good as it ever was..... but I'd do the TPS reset and the 'Etenully Flog' thing first.... |
