Hi, yesterday a fiend with a XB9Sx (Euro Bike )had a problem with the bike, when we were riding in low speed , he saw that the oil lamp started on, as we were so close to home he thought to put oil later, but around 100 meters the bike loose torque and power then a horrible metallic sound from the motor, stop the bike , he started the bike few minutes later and the bike runs at idle too high and the metallic sound persists, he is scared , no oil leak from cylinders or smoke any idea ?? sorry for my english and if i have not explain very well what happens to the bike, but i'm a Tuber, jeje |

What year is it? Oil pump drive gear maybe? Do NOT run the motor until the problem is found. |

Hi Luxor, 2007 about the Oil pump drive gear , was the first thing i thought, for the tubers , but i was not sure if that it's common or not on XBs, |

2007 was the last year of the old oiling system. I would have a look at the gear for sure. And yes, the XB's had the problem too. |

The drive gear does fail on XB's but it's less common than on the tubers. In 2006 they added the bronze oil pump drive gear which makes it even less likely to fail. Hopefully that's not it. |

Bummer. Doesn't sound good. I dropped my oil pump in my 05 9sx at about 12k miles, and the gear was wearing, but not nearly as bad as my tuber. Now, at 30k miles, I am getting ready to drop it again and see if the wear progressed, or is still where it was at 12k. If it is progressing, I'll tear off the cam cover and replace it with the golden gear. If the oil light had not gone on first, I'd say it would also be worth checking for a loose stator bell. They can ring at idle when they get loose (and chew up the crank if you ignore them). If you put any load on the clutch at all, the ringing will stop. It sounds bad. But think how fun the 1250 big bore kit will be in that bike! |

If the valve lifters run out of oil they will make lots of noise. Adding oil and running it for a minute or two should allow them to refill. If they were making the noise you heard, it should go away. |

If the metallic scraping noise is periodic it is likely the connecting rod bearings. Time to rebuild the motor. Look at it from a positive perspective, though... you can pick and choose your bearings, rings, pistons, cams, etc. |
