Have any of you bolted on and hooked up the EBR 2008 computer to your Uly yet. If so, what are your impressions?

I have. It still needs work. EBR is diagnosing some cold start and running issues.

Mine worked flawlessly when first installed, but has since learned some "bad" things. It's pretty much a crap shoot as to whether of not the bike is going to run "just OK" or "really crappy".

I'm confident EBR will figure it out.

From Flawless to crappy is scary. I want a bit more "rich" instead of automatically seeking lean. Do you think yours is running too rich??? One thing is for sure, I will stick with what I've got until they get the reliability issue straight. Thanks for your input.

It's not running too rich. I pulled the plugs yesterday and they look great. I'm not sure why it's acting up now. One of the posters said he checked his AFV values (whatever that means) and the ECM had them set way too low, which was causing a lean condition I assume? I'd recommend waiting until EBR gets it ironed out, otherwise you'll just be shipping it back for a re-flash.

AFV = average fuel values. Lean is mean but big V twins like big gasoline. I'm all for being clean and green, but I can tell its too lean to be happy. If I ride mine in a sweet spot, rather high RPM's and aggressively, things are cool. However, putting around is out of the question, she's not happy, she wants to rock. More drivability, smoother low end power delivery, and less vibration is what I'm really after. A bit more power is always a bonus. I know its in there....somewhere.

Rwven,
when you installed did you set Reset the TPS?
I just installed on on an "09"XT,Drummer and KN filter.
Reset TPS,Set AFV Bike runs flawless.
I will be dynoing next week.
Just my .02

Wheelybueller,

Yes I did a TPS reset. The bike ran absolutely perfectly at first. Good clean power everywhere from 1500 rpm right up until it was bouncing on the rev limiter. Any load, any gear, any speed. It's gone to crap since then though. If I'm really wringing it's neck out it runs pretty good, part throttle not so much...

I've done several other TPS resets also. I tried getting the AFV to adjust by cruising steady at 4500 rpm for 20+ minutes also but that just seemed to make it worse.

Wheelybuller/Portero72

How is the power and drivability compared to stock????

Is it smooth and linear power or do you have to keep up the RPM????

What is it like from 2 to 3000 RPM???

Mine delivers the power nice and smooth, from about 2k on up, much better than the stock ecm. Driveability is much improved. I will write up a full report soon, and stop hijacking threads.

Ron - I hate to bring up this wonderful topic...but you don't have another intake leak starting, do you? Toss in your stock ECM and see how the bike behaves...something doesn't sound kosher.

Granted, I'm DDFI-2..but my EBR ECM has been flawless since install and the bike runs better than it ever has. Although, I do need to do a TPS reset - the ECM had old data in it from the last time it was installed in my bike, and it's *so close* but it does like to hiccup on coldstart once in a while...

Joe,

I'll try that ECM swap just to see if the symptoms follow, though I have other problems with my stock unit (speedo keeps dropping for one). I had a new rear tire mounted yesterday so I took it out to scuff it up a bit and other than the cold start issue it ran very well. As I said earlier it's a crap shoot....

I don't know about an intake leak, I never had one before to my knowledge. I would think that an intake leak would cause the ECM to err on the rich side, yet both plugs looked great (and more importantly identical) when I pulled them this weekend.
Perhaps it is an intake leak, or a faulty signal from a temperature or O2 sensor. Or maybe I just got a "challenged" ECM. A few other guys are having the same problem, EBR is aware of it and is looking into it, so I'm hoping for a solution on their end.

The cold start issue is strange. It will fire right up and fast idle perfectly. When the fast idle drops out 20 -30 seconds later it hunts for the idle speed through a 500-750 rpm range sometimes stalling but more often not. If I jump on the bike and ride to the end of my road (0.1 mile) it idles fine from there on.

With my race ecm I have the strange cold start issue as well. It started randomly a couple of summers ago and I have yet to figure it out. The intake seal fix didnt make a difference.

Ron - an intake leak will give you a lean condition - un-metered fresh air getting into the engine that's *not* going through the (metered) throttle body, so the computer - despite signals from the O2 - can't equalize things. It could be a small leak, making the computer try and close your AIS port at idle to 'correct' the idle speed...which closes off too much air, so it opens the AIS, which allows too much idle speed when the AIS opening combines with the leak...the computer doesn't know why X amount of AIS is causing X-squared amount of idle increase according to its tables and it gets confused....

I thought you had throttle body issues in the past...must have you confused with another badwebber. Sorry.

Easy check for seal leaks, though, is to spray carb cleaner at the intake manifold (airbox completely in place), where it meets the head, and see if your idle changes. If it does...found your leak.

Joe,

I didn't have a throttle body problem per se, I did have the Idle Air Servo go bad on me. When the IAS went bad the idle surging occured all the time, not just on start-up.

If it were being caused by an intake leak would it clear up consistently by riding it a very short distance? Such a small leak that the temperature increase closes it up perhaps? I'm going to plug my stock ECM back in and see if it still does it, that should tell me something. I'll try the carb cleaner trick too, which will entail a trip to WallyWorld....

Sometimes yes...sometimes, not so much. Depends on how bad the leak is, if something's loose causing a "wobble-leak"...but it is entirely possible that if it's a "young" leak and not very bad, warmup could "heal" it for a bit.

If you're adventurous with the carb cleaner, pull your IAS and clean both the pintle and it's seat. Don't have one on my Uly (darn DDFI-2 lol), but on my cars (25psi turbododge cars, and a beater 92 Wrangler 4.0) the AIS motors like to gunk up with carbon, causing similar problems. On the turbos it's from the boost I run (varies the fuel pressure WILDLY as the FPR is boost-referenced), and on the Jeep it's from...well, 160k miles on a beater so soot and carbon are natural. Don't think either of those would apply to your Uly, but....

I doubt its leaking inlet on these 2008/9 ecm reported cold start problems.
Mine has only 3K miles on the clock and runs/starts/idles perfect with stock ecm and runs like poo with the race ecm. I would have thought if the inlet was sucking, it would also be indicated while using stock ecm.

That is true...and if you read up, you'll see that I suggested Ron go back to his stock ECM to see if the problem migrates with the ECMs, or stays with the bike. He replied with "that's a good idea, I'll try it"...so we're awaiting that piece of data.

I read the whole thread before commenting.
The problems still lay with acknowledged faulty ecms and Rons' problems are remarkably the same as described by all that are experiencing this problem.
It could be possible that the intake is leaking but like i say... i doubt it very much.

I swapped out the ECM today. The bike fired right up and idled correctly.
