I've seen all the threads... I did the searches. I'm just looking for some more guidance. I wish I could pull the trigger on the Outdoorsman bags, but can't justify (or find the $ in my checking account) for Outdoorsman set-up. I have the top rack (from Twisted Throttle) so need a good side rack system and the saddlebags/top box. I ride a passenger so need to utilize the passenger pegs. Isn't there a decent system out there that desn't break the bank? I've got soft bags now (top and sides) but want something lockable and with the convenience of hard bags. Pelicans? Aluminum? Ideas?? | ||

For the life of me, I can't find a cheap way to do this. The Happy Trails option seems to be the most bang for buck option. | ||

Do it piecemeal. Find a dealer who'll sell you just the mounting racks. They're the important part, as all the different Hepco&Becker bags will mount up to it. Use them as a back brace for soft bags for a while until you can save up the cash to buy the Outdoorsman bags. Keep an eye on Ebay and Craig's list, and you might luck into a set of bags for short money. | ||

I got my side Journy bags and mounts for $700 at a dealer who had them in stock but had no bikes to option them on. SO he didn't want to be stuck with them. Get your local dealer to do a search for you. Then call that dealer direct and see if you can work the same deal. I like them. They are not as big as my K5 Krausers on my V Strom but the K5's are just freaking huge. I bought the tail pack for the beaver tail in the upright position as well. Plenty of storage now..... Bculy - I'm in the same boat. Here's the boxes that Prior got, he says they're great (and judging by how busy ep1c is, other people do too), def can't beat the price: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54 9028 Unfortunately he doesn't make racks for the Uly, so (as suggested above) you've got to find another one that provides a flat square mount surface and use a custom mounting kit. Happy Trails sells both. At that point you're looking at around a total of $600 for the racks, mounting kit and boxes. I've been looking around to see if I can find a used rack, but to no avail. I think Crusty has the right idea of doing it piecemeal - 600$ is a lot to thrown down at once. Pelican cases are also super-tough and a good choice. Mikef5000 - do you use these? Pics of them mounted to a Uly? (If anyone knows of Buell racks for sale without the cases I'd be interested) | ||

Thanks guys. All great ideas. I'll probably have to do it Crusty's method - piece by piece. I like the Pelican cases, but damn they're heavy! But the aluminum ones probably are too. | ||

I had Pelican 1440's on my XT for a while. Once you strip off the luggage handle extension and wheels, you're under 7# each. Those will require hand rail removal and no 2 up riding. Finally ended up with a set of used Hepco-Becker Gobi's that I got off the advrider site. They show up there once in a while for around $400.00/set. Fit right on the standard Uly racks without modification. IMHO, these are the cases that should have come stock on the Uly. If you want a super deal on aluminum cases, there's a guy on advrider who makes them and sells them for around $250.00. Nice stuff/well received there. Goes by the name of Ep!c in the Vendors thread. +2 on getting the racks first. Once you have those, there are a lot of options. | ||

Flat backed like most aluminum panniers. Best way to attach them is with a mount like Happy Trails makes. Used those on my Pelicans, and, for about $50.00, it's hard to do better. The only trick is that you have to drill the holes yourself. I didn't really want the Journey cases. I wanted the Outdoorsman bags, but since the Journeys came on my XT I figured I was stuck with them, as it looked to be an expensive endeavor to buy the different racks and the Outdoorsman bags. I figured I'd give the Journeys a try and if I just couldn't stand them I'd try to get something for them and bite the bullet and buy the Outdoorsman setup. Well, as it turns out I have been fairly pleased with the Journeys. I still like the look of the Outdoorsman bags better and I think they are made more durable, but my Journeys have not leaked on me yet and I have ridden in the rain a few times. They are big and hold a fair bit. I am much happier with them than I expected to be, so I will be keeping them. | ||

I'm happy with my Journey bags also. The weak latching mechanism worries me some so I am very careful to push the bags completely closed before I engage the latch. I also don't let anyone else open or close the bags. | ||

I am very happy with the aluminum cases I got and I have a Touratech rack system that is beefy as hell that I am equally impressed with. I think the rack actually weighs more than the cases. I've been meaning to get them mounted up and post a review, but have been incredibly short on time lately and am making my own mounting system at the college machine shop, but only have an hour or so each week outside of teaching classes to work on them. Hope to finish up this week and mount them next weekend. Some entrepreneurial soul should design up a set of bullet proof racks, sign up as a sponsor and start cranking these out- there's lots of options for aftermarket cases, but few for racks. I'd do it, but don't have the tools right now, nor the time and Heather would kill me... Maybe a summer project! Prior | ||

My buddy just got the Happy Trails 38.5 Liter Teton panniers for his KLR. I couldn't help myself, and threw them on my XT. With some very minor modifications, they could fit!!! Look like this but without the decals:  1)Signals need relocated back 2" 2)Mounting puck system:  is made for thicker tubing, so you would either need to beef up our tubing, or shave down the back of the aluminum 'mounts'. 3)Measure and drill holes. The way the happy trails boxes open out, they actually miss the passenger handles! No need to remove the triple tail and all. The hammertone black powder coat looks amazing! I left my camera at home, or I would have pictures of them on my Uly. | ||

Personally, I'm going the Happy trails route myself. They might be a bit of coin, but with bags like that you can mount them on your next bike also simply by buying the su side rack for that model. | ||

Rode with my Journey bags in the hard rain today for the 1st time. Results, both side cases leaked. Needless to say I'm not too happy. Now I just need to decide weather to pack everything in dry bags before loading the cases or going with new cases. I wonder if they would be covered under warranty? | ||

My 2008 xb12x will be the fourth bike that my Happy Trails panniers have been on (KLR, Tiger, Wee Strom). With a change of bike, I buy a SU rack and transfer the Aluminum Panniers (purchased in 1999). HT products are very durable. Excellent bang for the buck. I highly recommend the pannier system. | ||

On the cheap you could use the Happy Trails mounts and then use 20mm ammo cans until you come up with the cash for the aluminum cases. Ammo cans can be had for $20 a piece and are near the same size as some of the cases on the market. |
