I'm bruised but ok. As I was riding home last night from the bar I work at, I was
stopped at Kingshighway and Manchester here in Saint Louis at the light and the next thing I know, I hear screeching, the back of my bike was lifted up and I was knocked over sideways. A older gentleman had misjudged his stopping distance and hit me square on. My legs, shins and ankles are bruised from the impact. My bike sadly took a good bit more damage than I did with bent swing arm, road rash on the bike, both side cases damaged and it had to be towed to Gateway where it now sits. The gentleman that hit me was cited for multiple things and got a ride from the nice policeman that
responded to the call from being under the influence. Ironically I had just gone to a First Responders class on Friday night. I had multiple cars stop and make sure I was ok and called 911 for me.

But I'm bruised and ok and hopefully after a fair amount of repair, Beast will be back!

Glad to hear you are ok. Bikes can be fixed, bodies are another matter. Rest up.

Great that your are ok, watch deep bruising inner thigh. If I remember correctly the original Hurt report said that these rear enders were the least common of two vehicle MC accidents. I have been reading that they are becoming one of the most common two vehicle MC accidents due to cell phone users.

It is sad that this can happen but a lot drivers now are simply incompetent and they just don't see bikes.

When sitting at red lights I always have the bike slightly angled, ready for escape. ALWAYS watch your mirrors at stop lights and never get boxed in with no escape route behind the car in front of you.

Twice in my 20+ year riding career I have had to ride the bike off the road to the right to avoid being hit in this same scenario when stopped at a red light. Both times it was when I was the only one at the light, but I keep an open route when cages are in front of me as well.

Never trust a cage driver to do what they are supposed to do.

+1 on keeping an escape route. I never sit in N at a light, always first gear, no front brake, toe on rear brake only, clutch in and ready to go in an instant.

I also have auxiliary brake lights on all my bikes. The 'normal' one stays put, so it speaks the universal "I'm stopping"...but I add some sort of LED light with a flasher that also activates with the brakes. Not only does the eye get drawn to "motion" (flashy things), but two separate light sources creates a better ability to judge distance - you get closer, the distance between the 2 lights grows, and the vacant cager *might* have the thought process of "hey, I'm getting closer".

Glad you're OK. As noted above, bikes can be fixed (although, with my titanium, I'm walking proof that bodies can be fixed too...but it's a HUGE PITA to go through it, LOL).

Glad you're OK and hope the jerk's insurance company squares you away without any trouble.

I've been rear ended at stops twice, luckily at low enough speeds I didn't go down. But when some idiot in an Excursion one day went ABS-chattering by me and into the intersection, missing my right side by inches, that really woke me up.

Installed a BackOff modulator and another LED tail-brake light, rigged them with separate flash modes which gave quite a light show. Made a noticeable improvement in how far behind me cars would stop.

I think I may have killed the unit though running the two modes simultaneously, so now I just fiddle with the brake lever at stops as I keep my eyes on the mirrors.

Glad to hear you are OK.

Make sure the insurance folks look deep into the swing arm mounting, engine isolators, main frame brackets and such.

Very sorry to hear of your wreck, Mideon, but it is SUPER that you are okay. That kind of wreck is one of my greatest concerns when riding. Best to ya'.

The same thing happened to me last May on my KLR. I was sitting at a red light at 5:30am and some idiot rear ended me with a spot ute. Bike got punted from under me and went flying; I went flying. I was lucky too. Just sore as hell for a week. Make sure you get checked over physcially. Injuries can show up later that you didn't know were there. If the guy that hit you has insurance his insurance will pay for it. The first thing I did was install Hyper lights on the rear. A quick hit of the front or rear brake will flash 10 super bright red LEDs. Definetly gets some attention. Thinking about it now, I wonder if anything would have made a difference. He was probably asleep at the wheel. The good thing is you are here to tell about it. The bike can be fixed or replaced.

Well saw the doc today and lots of bruises and a few other things he wants to watch including a couple small sprains.

The bike is in the capable hands of some of the best Buell techs around at Gateway Buell. Between their damage assessor Marion and the main Buell master Buzzie. They will do their own full assessment of the bike and compare that with what the insurance company says and they will not let something be cheaply repaired and make sure the insurance company does me right. The are holding a XP for me : ) just incase it's a total out.

I just want to be riding again. Every bike I saw today made me more and more depressed. My Uly was my dream bike and had it just the way I wanted him!

mmm New XP, I hope they total it and let you have it back for cheap. Don't forget to check the rear engine mount. Heal quick. Listen to the Doc and "not let something be cheaply repaired and make sure the insurance company does" you "right."

Mideon, glad your doing ok. That happened to me in 2002. Red light, 6:00 a.m. GMC pickup at 45 MPH never saw me. The Road Glide and I went 70 feet together and I walked away with a sore back and a broken thumb. Guardian angels are awesome! Bike was replaced and I'm fine so don't fret, it'll get better. Which bar do you work at anyway? Might have to stop by and meet you.
