And I haven't even threatened to get rid of him... Lately I'm hearing a fairly low-pitched "whine" at moderate to high speeds on the '06 Uly; the pitch of the whine is keyed to the speed of the bike, not the engine. Declutching has no effect. It is not dependent on road surface. Naturally my first thought is wheel bearings. The bike has 30K miles, so I'm doing the 10K maintenance today. I'll check wheel bearings as part of it. Anybody have any other possible sources of such a sound? Idler pulley? Countershaft bearing? Thanks in advance, etc. --Doc | ||

I've noticed a little of that on my Uly ('06) since returning to the stock muffler - allowing me to actually *hear* things! Since I run 616's, I chalked it up to a smaller form of "tire hum" like I get from the 31s on my Jeep. I run black seal bearings in my rear wheel that are in good shape, but still have the OEM orange ones in the front (12k miles). Be interesting to see what you find... | ||

The idler pulley bearings do go bad occasionally, so be sure and check those. | ||

my 07 with a little over 2k on it (stock muffler) I can hear a little mechanical hum. It's just the bike doing what it does best. Running correctly! | ||

Mine started doing that just before my wheel bearing let go. About 55-60 mph there was a little whine, almost like a whistle. I thought it was the way the wind was blowing around the fly screen. I was wrong. | ||

I removed the rear wheel; the rear wheel bearings, the idler pulley bearings, and the countershaft bearings feel just fine. However, I noticed this:  At 60 mph, I calculated the frequency of the missing tooth passing over the countershaft sprocket would only be about 18 Hz, well below the pitch of the whine that I've been hearing. However, it could be generating many higher harmonics, so---even though it seems strange for a MISSING tooth to generate noise---I'm going assume that's the problem, and I'm going to install the NEW belt (was gonna wait until shortly before Homecoming for that) and see what happens. I still have one more used belt for a spare. BTW, this belt has something between 25,000-30,000 miles on it. It is not the original belt; the original owner had the belt replaced early in the bike's life. But it is an early model belt. --Doc | ||

Wow Doc, thanks for the report. I would not have thought of that. If the new belt does not fix it then maybe the tires should be a suspect as well. | ||

Dr_greg, I did the missing tooth thing around December. It didn't produce a whine. Ratbuell, I run 31"s on my Jeep. If you rotate them every 6k miles or less they wont start whining. | ||

Doc, we're going tooling around "South 14" for a while tomorrow. Coffee At Dawn in Cedar Crest at 0900. Maybe lunch in Mountainair, then probably turn back and go to Santa Fe. If it's still nice and I'm feeling frisky, maybe return via NM4 and Valles Caldera. You are, of course, invited to join us. Should be about six Buells and various other makes. | ||

Ourdee - ya, I rotate every vehicle's tires at every other oil change. They're all 4x4, and I refuse to cup tires because I'm too lazy to rotate. Got 65k out of the first set of tires on our diesel ram! But...these 31s are just *that* aggressive. They hummed when new...and I loooove it!  | ||

Thought I'd bring this story to an end... Never overlook the obvious! I took a look at my front tire (Distanzia with about 7,000 miles)...I haven't seen that much feathering since BIG BIRD!! A little hard to see in this photo, but it's BAAAAD.  New tires on the way. This time Michelin Pilot Road 2's for the trip to Homecoming and beyond. --Doc | ||
