While bringing my 2009 1125CR to the dealer for the harness install it started knocking. The dealer is about 40 miles away (selling dealer McHenry HD). I started to notice a strange noise on the way there. By the time I was close to the dealer it was obvious that the noise was not normal. I also noticed that the noise went away by about 75-80% when I disengaged the clutch at idle. The noise was present from idle to a little over 4,000 RPM. I'm an auto tech and I tinker with my bikes but I'm not so sure what this is. Sounds like a possible transmission problem or a bearing in the engine. I'm a little surprised by this since the bike had less than 100 miles on it when the noise started. It now has about 110 or so.

Sounds similar to an issue I had.

There is a nut inside the transmission that needed re-torqued.

There is a Race Bulletin the Dealer can search and find for this issue, or they can call HD Service for the procedures, that is what the Dealer that mine was fixed at did.

May not be the same issue, but something to check.

I hope that's it, or something else that's "minor". I really don't want a major engine or transmission repair or replacement. After all, it is a "new" engine right now. I just called the dealer and they're going to call back in a few minutes.

Let me know how well McHenry's service goes with the Buell. I live closer to McHenry and use them to service the Harley's. I have never had any issues with their Harley service.

I bought my 1125R from Woodstock and they had a great guy in the service department that really seemed to be knowledgeable about Buells, especially the 1125r. He actually came out and talked to me when I was in the purchase process.

They said they took the clutch apart and put it back together and found nothing. I am picking it up tomorrow. Either they just tightened it up and put it back together or they truly found nothing and put it back together, in which case it will still have the problem and I will have to bring it right back. They completed the charging harness but the service writer did not know if they updated the flash. I told him the newest flash is 152 I believe. He said he will make sure it has whatever flash the recall calls for or the newest flash if there is a more recent one. I will check when I pick it up.

I will see if I can find the race bulletin and maybe call them back.

have them take off the engine case where the stator is at and look at the bracket at the top cause that screw could be loose thats what happened to mine and i didnt catch it in time and now they are replacing my whole engine because the screw backed out and knocked a little hole in the engine case and got metal all in my engine

Does anyone know for sure what nut the race bulletin refers to? It could be the nut that holds the primary drive gear to the crank, the nut that holds the clutch hub to the transmission input shaft, or possibly the nut that holds the alternator rotor to the crank on the side opposite of the primary gear. De-clutching wouldn't change the noise in that case though.
Gofast, if they just took the clutch apart the only thing they could have checked is the clutch hub to transmission input shaft nut. When you find out more would you be so kind as to post what the resolution is?

Jonesz0003, When the screw backed out, could you hear it, or was the first indication a hole in the case?

Check the Stator Nut torque.

I picked up the bike Saturday and rode home. Once the bike got warm the noise started again. It may be a "normal" engine noise since I never had a chance to really ride it for long periods of time until I took it to the dealer. After about 10 miles the noise starts and again, it goes away about 75% when the clutch is pulled in.

I asked the dealer if they uploaded the most recent flash and they said there wasn't any. It was not 152 when I checked on the cluster. Also, I thought the 152 came out after I took delivery of the bike on 1/2/10. No matter, I am still in the process of "break-in".

I did change the oil when I got home (157 miles) and completely missed my oil pan on the left side leaving 2+ qts of oil on my garage floor. Next time I will put the kickstand in the pan or get a race stand. Oh, plus my cowl flew off on the highway - I had removed the seat and velcro'd it on. Luckily I bought this cowl as a spare and have all my original stuff, which I put back on. Oh well, I tried and experiment and it didn't work. I have yet to check my denoid resistor to see if they removed it. I did notice several codes when I dropped the bike off at the dealer and they have cleared all the codes when I picked it up. I think there were about 8 codes stored previously. One other thing, the AFV was 100%F and 105%R when I dropped it off and 100%F and 110%R when I picked it up.

I will check the stator nut torque this week.

BTW, I was getting 13.9-14.0V on the way home. Outside temp lo-mid 70s.

Hi Go Fast,

I had the wiring harness done recently on my CR and it looks like 152 is indeed the latest and correct one for the CR (I had previously gotten 152 from a different dealer). My adventures (not in a good way) with both dealers are documented in the "Three strikes....HD" thread here.

I think the bike will run cooler with the 152 flash and therefore it is of value during the break-in process too.

Maybe I'm not checking the flash correctly. I pressed both Toggle and Menu then turned the key on and got into diag mode. The last thing on the menu was calibration and it said 6.1 and the other one said 1.0. I thought that's where it would show 152. Is it somewhere else?

Can't see the flash rev with ODIS.
You have to connect a computer with Digital Tech or ECM Spy software or such.

Thanks Zac.

BTW, checking the stator bolts seems like a big PITA. Looks like the charging cover and rotor have to be removed first.

Hairy, i couldnt hear the bolt, cause my bike was always kinda loud from day one, the only indication i had was the engine light that came on then the bike dieing and leaving me on the side of the rode lol, and its wasnt a hole it just looked like a small pimple on the case cover and i only noticed it cause i was trying to see where the oil was coming from and kept trying to crank the bike over and it shot alil oil out and hit me in the face lol, ive tried to get a good pic of it but doesnt ever turn out good but i can send one to your email if you want?

We too had metal shavings in oil and noise in engine. After three weeks HD determined nut on clutch was loose. They want to tighten and put back together. We ask what about metal in oil. HD did not see this as a problem. After more discussion they are taking another look at issues & now is 4 weeks and no bike. Last year timing chain tensioner went out & engine replaced, then two stators went out. So far HD has had our bike three months of our riding time. We really like the bike, but we like getting to ride bikes more than just owning one. We have very few problems with our tube frame Buells.

My bike has developed an issue today which may be this one...

I was about a block away from work, heading for the parking garage, when I noticed this horrible screetching noise coming from my bike intermittently, like some metal parts inside were brushing together as things rotated.

It's only present when moving forward and is present regardless of the engine being on or off, in gear or neutral, and irrespective of the brake status.

Does the above description sound similar to the issue with the stator nut or is it more likely something else?

Whatever my issue was, it went away on its own when I was riding it gently to the dealer for inspection.

Perhaps it was just some sand/tiny gravel in the sprocket?

So I just wanted to post up to tell what the issue on my bike was.

Later on Thursday the 29th, I took my bike to a local independent tech for some scheduled maintenance. Part of which was new bearings and axle spacers all around. The rear brake-side bearing was completely shot. By the time I got to the tech's shop, the seal had given out and "bled" orange rusty liquid all over the brake rotor / wheel / swingarm.
It was toast; probably had been for a while.

No reason it didn't seize up, except the Lord above.
