My friend and I took a trip to Deal's Gap this weekend. I rode my S3T and he rode his XB9S. We were talking about mods and he suggested putting a Firebolt tail section on the Lightning. Has this been done? Looks like the electricals would be the tough part. I know the Firebolt fairing area houses some components, but they may all be under the seat on the Lightning. Any help or advice is appreciated. | ||

You would have to do some serious fitting. There isn't enough room under the tail section unless maybe you fitted the rearseat cowl and tucked the extra stuff under there. Course you wouldn't be able to carry a passenger. | ||

That's the one that no one's dare to try yet, mainly due to the reason you just noted. It's my personal belief that there is enough room in the Firebolt tail section for all the electronics, BUT - you'd most likely have to lengthen significant portions of it AND lose the trunk space to electronics (one of the primary pros of the Firebolt tail over the Lightning). I think you could probably still get the passenger seat on there (another pro), but all in all you're talking some serious work, both with the electronics and cutting/fabbing the plastic and mounting bracketry. Hey, if he's serious, he'll find plenty of people to give friendly advice, and more power to him! | ||

When I put the R front fairing and bars on My S, I also wanted the Rear. Way to much work, making it all work and fit properly. I just finished off the rear with the American Sport Bike rear seat cowl. and of course removing the pasta strainer! good luck, whatever you decide.  | ||

Gonen60, Man I really do like the way your bike turned out. Even though I did the same mod, I like the look of that rear seat with the cowl. I may have to do that soon. That a Zero Gravity double bubble? | ||

austin..yes zero gravity double bubble, a world of improvement. DC..same instrument cluster, had to change ignition switch though.. | ||

Can the Firebolt clip on handlebars be installed directly on the Lightning? | ||

Mark, yes and no. you have to do some cutting. and your key gets whittled down to almost nothing. Torqer's done it and it looks good. | ||

Gonen, Austin, Can you please tell me what components you needed to obtain (besides the front module/fairing, ignition, top tree, and handlebars) to convert the front to R from S. Sorry if you already listed the info. | ||

I did have 2 extra bolts that I wound up not needing, but dammed if I know which part number it is. I have been keen to put the R tail on my XB12S... Cost of the rear subframe was the killer... Since my dealer is feeling a bit guity, he arranged for me to pick up a rear subframe for nothing, just has a really small twist... I'll be seing if i can straighten it out this weekend... Also picked up white tail plastic with a very small scratch and an undertray. Banged up this pic... Not super quality, took 5 minutes... When you are two-up it's really hard to move around on the S... So I thought what the hell. | ||

I had wanted to do that when I bought my 12S. I asked Buckinfubba about it to get prices and all. He told me that the major hold up was the electrical parts that are under the seat on the S are normally in the front fairing on the R. It is something that can be done once you relocate those items. Here's a picture I showed my dealer when I was pricing the parts at Chosa's.  | ||

Subframe alone RRP of around $1,500AUD... Just on the exchange rate that's $1,100US... Probably wouldn't cost that much, though, since we have to pay a shitload of taxes and duties... I fitted the subframe and plastic up this afternoon... Couldn't for the life of me find where the subframe was twisted... Turns out it is the plastic!! It's been stored twisted so it makes the subframe look bent. SCORE!! I took some photo's, so I will put put them up on the trenchtractor site today or tomorrow... Also took that baby •••• green section out of the chin spoiler and replaced it with a black section. It rocks. | ||

 So here is a pick... Just a dry run to see how much work is in the changeover... You'll notice there are no electric's sticking out... YES, they are all there!!! Even got the Shock resovoir in place. More pic's here... http://www.geocities.com/trenchtractor/contents Anyone got any picks of a stock XBR under seat set-up... I know the R's have the electrics in the front, but I reckon I can get the ECM in beside the battery under the riders seat, I will probably have to extend the fuse box up under the pillion seat. That doesn't bother me, Electronics is my trade... All up, it looks heaps easier than everyone made out... Biggest issue is getting someone to do a decent job of painting the white tail section I have. |
