After installing the Outdoorsman bags, no topcase, on my Uly I've noticed a SLIGHT wobble/weave in straight line stability at 75-80 mph. The bags are lightly loaded, maybe a sweatshirt in one and some light junk in the other. The rest of the bike is stock, windscreen, etc. I noticed this with the Bridgestone BT-016 tires I had on and now also with the Pirelli Angels. Has anybody else noticed this? | ||

Does the front tire have a circumferential rain groove? Almost sounds like what the old Dunlops did. | ||

No, both the Bridgestone and the Pirelli I've used don't have that feature. It doesn't do it with the bags removed so I'm guessing it's wind related. Just wondered if others noticed this? | ||

I've got the Journey bags on my XT, and I've noticed no wobble. Terri has Hepco & Becker 30 Liter Junior bags (same as the Outdoorsman) on her Lightning Long, and it shows no signs of weave or wobble. Have you tried adjusting the suspension a little? Maybe just a little change in compression or rebound will correct it. | ||

I have the 40 liter HB Juniors (the wider version of the Outdoorsmans), no top case, and I have NOT noticed any wobble (do gee). | ||

Get an '09 owners manual. It has different suspension settings for XT and X. The bags make a difference. Set the bike up properly, you won't have an issue. | ||

Bottom of the chart for X/XP shows: ***XB12X (only) load includes rider, passenger, cargo, accessories and riding gear. ***XB12XP (only) add 60 lbs for empty bags, brackets and pursuit equipment. Having had hands-on with the pursuit equipment...I'd say 45lbs is safe for just bags (three). Side cases only, figure about 35-38lbs (empty). (Message edited by ratbuell on April 06, 2010) | ||

Why would there be no wobble without the bags with the settings I'm using? Add the bags and there is a perceptible weave in straight line cruising at 75-80, bags empty? It's something I can live with just odd. Rat: Wouldn't the different settings between an X and an XB be because the forks and shocks are different? Apples and oranges? Yes, X and XP are the same bike, just one has bags and the other doesn't. My first post has a typo, I put X versus XT - my bad. I run an X with bags, and use the XP base settings with no issues at all. Let me clarify - since there was no XP for '06/07 (I have a hybrid suspension since I put in '07 progressive fork springs), I factored in the additional weight and set it per the '07 manual for that weight. The reason the bags change the handling is: - dead weight of the bags (granted, only about 10 lbs each) - airframe drag of the bags I've been tinkering with my '06 X long enough that I can change only the rear preload to accomodate side bags on/off, and passenger on/off. Front end has stock '07 springs and '07 settings, fine tuned for my preferences, and rear damping is the same. And as Froggy and Etennuly (and others) will tell you, I run the 'goofy' D616 tires to boot! (Message edited by ratbuell on April 07, 2010) | ||

I am having the same issue. I have a 2010 XB12X with the XP bags and over 85-90 mph I definitely have a front end wobble. It seems like the front tire wants to come off the ground. Any suggestions. | ||

There is a disclaimer in the owners manual not to exceed 80 MPH with the bags installed? I know I've exceeded 80 on my XT without dire results, but I haven't made it to 90. | ||

My GPS tells me that I top the century on a regular basis, with all three bags. No wobble. More rear preload should keep the front end planted properly. *TRY* it. Just add the weight, like you're a heavier rider, and reset your suspension. It's easy. Best of all....it works. |
