WOW nice video, both of you. Jdugger, could you explain 'all crossed up' to an old guy wanting to understand the subtleties of riding style. The other video posted showed a rider with much more body movement than your video. Can you help me see the differences a bit.
The basic issue of "crossed up" is leaning across the bike instead of with it. As a result, you use more lean angle than necessary for the given radius and speed, and you are more apt to high side.
Notice how in Keith's video his butt hangs off, but his shoulders are squared up over the bike. So, if we took imaginary lines, Keith is pointed to the right when he's turning left, and vice versa.
In the second video, Ricky's shoulders lead into the turn. He's tight and locked into the bike. Notice how his body points into the direction of the turn.
Jdugger, it's funny watching that video. The CMRA Expert guy looks pretty quick but the track record holder is easily keeping up with him and he's not even taking the best lines. There are repeated opportunities where he could have easily passed. That dude is FAST!
Here's the real kicker: The guy on the camera bike is on a 600 with poor fueling and the "expert" is on a GSXR-750.
The guy on the camera bike is none other than Ty Howard. When he races CMRA, he passes the entire field in the first corner or two and then CHECKS OUT. He set the track record at Eagles Canyon on a KTM RC8 -- way down on power compared to the superbikes. And, yet, he passes anyone, any where and any time he likes.
The reason he didn't pass in this video is Ty gives private lessons, and that's the video from one of them on a day I was also riding and getting lessons from Ty. So, this video is of Ricky for the purpose of review between sessions.
But, don't underestimate the lead rider. He's turning mid-150s in this video, but I've seen him do a 150 flat. That's *seriously* fast. Crazy fast. Anything under 2 minutes at Eagle's Canyon is very fast.
JDUGGER- thanks for the input... i am going over some options to get me more comfortable on the bike and give my gorilla arms some more room.... i will be there in june... dont know when.. next is TWS on the 31st... but thank you for the input seriously.. body position has always been an issue with me cause im a taller guy.. but yeah im workin on it....
AND YES TY HOWARD IS SCARY FAST!!!!.... INSANE.....
Do level 3 with Ty in June at ECR. I'll come out and we can play a bit.
The thing you are doing wrong is less a result of your body geometry, and more a common rider problem that many riders (incl me) have when they start to hang off more.
There's several ways to fix it. We will look at where you weight the bike in the turn, how you pivot your hips, and where you put your head. You make have heard "chin over inside handlebar" or "ear touches inside mirror" as examples of how to position yourself.
When you do come back, rent a covered paddock from Maggie at the track across from my garage. We will have the grill out and make an afternoon party of it all!
your definitely crossed up. I bet your back was very sore after a few sessions. However, I ride the same way and I need to unlearn the crossed style since it hurts my back. I recently crashed my bike in a turn possibly from leaning over too far just to get a knee down. The crossed style is probably what did me in.
