Leaving the house this morning, go over the speed table and as the rear wheel comes of .. the belt breaks. There have been some questions relative to belt life and the spring loaded tensioners. This is what I have.... @36,412 mi New Drive Belt and Free Spirits Belt Tensioner @49,954 mi 2010 Rear Wheel (probably not relevant?) @53,860 mi Belt Broke So, with the original belt and stock tensioner I got 36,412mi. The belt did not break. I replaced it as preventative maintenance. I put the spring tensioner on with a new belt... 17,488 miles on this setup before the belt failed. Pretty consistant riding style. Oh and a big thanks to Bumpus.. a new belt is on the way. I got their last one.. they appear to be back ordered until April 29. (Message edited by gamdh on April 05, 2010) |

Gamdh -I put the sspring tensioner on with a new belt... 17,488 miles on this setup before the belt failed. Was this another '06/first generation Ulysses belt? |

No, it was an updated version at the time...G0500.1AKE. Which is now superseded by the 'F'. |

Thank you for posting the data. Curious - and not to point fingers or anything, just trying to get a full picture...did the belt get tweaked at all during the wheel swap? Or possibly during an intermittent tire change? I know they don't like being folded/bent and sometimes it's hard to thread the wheel/pulley out of there without catching the belt... Good info though, thanks! |

Rat.. nope.. I do all the wheel removal/replaces myself. So, I would know if anything out of the ordinary occurred with the belt. (and would be the first to admit if I'd done something stupid ) |

Great... I just put on a new "E" belt. Maybe there's a reason they went to a "F". |

Chain conversion... |

I hated belts, so I put a chain conversion on my M2. 10,000 miles later, I went back to a belt. The chain was maintenance intensive, made a mess of the side of the bike from chain lube and had to be left ridiculously loose, because it would tighten up a lot as the swingarm moved up. It was worn out in only 10,000 miles, and the kit cost as much as a belt and both sprockets, especially since I had to replace the crap Diamond chain that came with it for a good quality O-ring chain. At 53,000 miles, I'd recommend changing out the sprockets along with the belt. A worn sprocket can shorten a belt's life significantly. |

+1 on what Crusty said. My rear pulley on my X1 was worn out and I just slapped a new belt on. It only lasted 12,000 miles. The chrome had peeled off mostly and the soft chewy caramel center of the pulley had worn down. I'll know for sure once the new belt has more miles. The last belt didn't snap but had all the teeth scrape loose. odd eh? |
