Any of you guys out there replaced the multitude of torx fasteners with button head allen's? I've lost a few of the torx fasteners. Either I didn't have them tight enuff, and one time I forgot about them piled up on the cam chest near the timing plug hole and took it for a test ride and spread them out on the highway. Dave or Bubba... what's a bag of 10 of these replacement torx fasteners cost? The stainless ones with the shoulder used for the bodywork and the plain black ones? Maybe you guys can work up a "kit" or something eh? | ||

Do you think HD will cover those under warranty, I've already replaced like 3 of the damn things. The lower left fairing one where it attaches to the exhaust in front of the kickstand is stripped. I finally put a nut and bolt in it's place. | ||

I replaced some of my button head factory Torx bolts with stainless steel allen heads purchased at Home Depot. Al from American Sport Bike turned me on to the fact that Home Depot had these on the shelves.... | ||

The make a version of loc-tite that is not as permanent. I have found it to work great on bolts for my M2 I think it is purple. | ||

I lost one on the RHS of the chin fairing despite using Loctite, noticed it missing 3 days after it had been to the dealer (hope that was a coincidence), cost $7.15 AUD to replace and about 70c for the nylon washer. The new replacement came with a really thick coating of Loctite-looking stuff on the threads. | ||

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who's had a problem with this. I've worked on my own cars for as long as I remember and I've lost at least one of those fasteners from each time I take the chin fairing off to change the filter, very frustrating. Bubba, how bout that set. Call me lazy but my dealership feels too far and too boring of a drive away to go get them. Besides, I'm waiting on new tires right now anyway. I'm gonna be the guinea pig for the new Z6's by Metzler. I'll let you all know what I think of them. | ||

Another tidbit for anyone ever in search of hardware. Mcmaster Carr, the greatest hardware store in the world, has a fabulous website, and pretty much any fastener you need, they have: www.mcmaster.com . They've got a few different warehouses, and stuff always arrives fast. Torx fasteners suck. I don't know why Buell uses them. I replace them with standard button allen heads whenever possible. However, the shiny black torx fasteners Buell uses aren't common in button allen head. I can find shiny stainless, or dull black oxide (which will rust), but not shiny black of the non-stainless-but-still corrosion-resistant type that Buell uses. Also, I can't find the equivalent of the shoulder screws that Buell uses for their plastic part mounting. So I just use regular fasteners and loctite. On thing that is nice for mounting plastic parts: Bonded Sealing washers. The rubber cushions the plastic surface from abuse by the steel washer, and provides an elastic element in the stackup to keep the threads in moderate preload to help with locking (and the washer has a slight belleville spring profiles as well). On a previous bike, I took VHT high Temp paint, masked off the threads and just painted all the allen caps for all the case bolts cause I couldn't afford the stainless ones. The VHT kept the heads from corroding and with a little care in assembly looked damn good. |
