Just coming home from work last week and stopped for a cold one. Went to leave and would not start (no neutral light) so I feathered the shift up and down and got the light to come one and then the starter worked. Thought that was kind of weird. Then a couple miles down the road I started to down shift and had one hell of a time going up and down trying to get it to go to another gear. Well I made it home in either 2nd or 3rd and got it in the garage and got it to go into neutral. After looking at some past postings it sounds like it could be the clip (retaining ring) that holds the detent plate in. I have the primary cover off now and can not find any pieces or parts in the bottom so far. Well misery loves company and any other ideas you may have will most assuredly welcome. |

This often happens when the primary chain needs adjustment. |

Froggy thanks for the quick response but I had no chain slop noise before I stopped nor after, it just happened all of a sudden plus the adjustment shoe is just fine. I have had chains get loose before (I adjusted it about 3k ago) and they make quite a racket. I'm going into town now to get parts to make a spring compressor tool. then I'm going to cut and grind a piece of 3/16 x 1-1/4 mild steel to use as a sprocket locking link. Forward Ho. |

Sounds exactly like when my detent/retainer went south. If I recall, mine didn't completely snap but deformed enough so things slipped around. Good opportunity to get the new cut detent plate. DAve |

So Dave, is this an upgraded detent from the factory? Also is there a separate part number? Oh and thanks so much for the info. |

I made my version of the clutch spring compressor tool out of 3" pvc and a bolt, washer and 3 nuts and it is just great. I also have the engine sprocket nut off but what do I hold onto to get the mainshaft (left hand thread) nut loose. I hate to wreck anything this close to my goal. |

Ok I got the main shaft nut off by using a 2x4 between the rim spokes and swing arm. Yes, the clip that holds the detent plate was gone and what was left was sticking on the drain plug magnet. The clip is .70 and they have to get it from the shop 20 miles away. Super job Ya'll Thanks. (Message edited by Buell_Bert on August 27, 2010) |

Yuppers. Got it back together just a bit ago and it seems just fine. Will be checking for leaks but it shifts just great and it stays in neutral with the light on. Another successful BWB story. |
