Just picked up a 2002 X-1 demo at a good price. My stripped-down '98 S-1 still not running, but tooo beautiful--so I need to pretty-up the X-1,but what to do about that u-u-ugly black plastic airbox stuff?Does this stuff also actually help with engine-cooling?Other problem I'm having is that every now-and-then I miss a shift...seems like the gears are 'riding on the dogs' for a better description...PLEASE HELP! Also the injection seems to run rough when I gas her from the lights--as though I've water on the plugs...I don't have experience in the world of injectors. |

Mobil 1 gear oil in the primary will help some with the shifting, as will careful adjustment of the shift linkage and the primary chain tension. |

Quite a few options for the airbox.....forcewinder intake works well, carbon fibre air cleaneer covers available as well. (personalyy I like the force, have it on my S3, had it on my X1)....as far as the mis-shifts go...how well 'demo'd' was this bike? ... if you bought it from a dealer direct, ask them to put it on the scanalyzer for you...see what it comes up with, the built it diagnostics for the injected bikes have been faithfully accurate for me. |

Thanks guys,I'm in Johannesburg,South Africa just to tell you.The bike is from the dealership and he is really excellent. The other thing that I need to know, does all that plastic crud really serve any true purpose--such as perhaps force air onto the top end to help cooling? My S-1 ran pretty hot so I just figured that those scoops may be of some use, ugly as they are.Maybe I could toss'em and make up something more sano-looking,that does the job out of ally? |

The scoop on the left does indeed direct air to the rear cylinder, but the S3 makes the same power, and doesn't have the scoop. I know people who have removed theirs with no ill effects. I sort of like it there. 'Course, I have the stock airbox on mine too, but with a K&N in it. The X1 with the plastic doesn't look as clean as an S1, but then...it's not an S1. What Reep said about the shifting. Your timing chain is probably a little too sloppy. I use sportrans in mine (finally got all the redline heavy flushed out of it) and it shifts great. |

I insisted on keeping my stock air box (plus the cooling one on the left) - It just seems appropriate on the X1's. It is a bit bulky, but that is part of the charm and original look to me. Mike M |

Hmmmmm...,some interesting points of view concerning the airbox, gents.I guess it does kinda separate the S-1 from the X-1,ugly or not.I have found an old Buell workshop manual in which is described an adjustment to the shifter mechanism that turns the shifter-drum.I remember a similar sort of set-up on my '70 Camaro Z-28's 4-speed'Bonecrusher'Muncie transmission, where a rod of a prescribed thickness is inserted into a gap and then a pinch-bolt or grub-screw is tightened...and--voila! no more missed shifts! Now all I need is to find a rod of the correct size and then after I get the job done I'll report back with the result. In the meantime, go have a rip on yer bootiful Buells! The best bike on the planet! |

Whoa! FTD that sure is one gorgeous X-1! Does the Force work ok in the rain? Also, do you do a lot of city riding...as in, does'nt she run hot in slow, stop-start work? Whatever, I must say that your X-1 is toooo pretty--hope you don't mind if I follow some of your q's man. Another mission I'm on is to fit a V-Rod headlight up front...fly the fly-screen, tidy up the clocks somehow. Should look slick, huh? |

I got the Force breather from http://cas4.com/ but lots of places carry them. Everything else is from American Sport Bike. I am a fan of less is more. I was looking for the "S1" look. The Force works fine in the rainy FL summer weather (it is treated with oil). I have never utilized the "sock" that came with it. Also, no issues with over heating in traffic. Run synthetic oil in engine though to ensure protection at those higher temps. Frank |

X1s look soooo much better with the plastic and airbox removed. For some reason, my bare Force didn't work well in the rain we have in Georgia. It works great with the sock though, but on my last ride in the rain, it blew off somehow. |

Gents, I have another question... I live in Johannesburg, and my kids live 1,750km away in Cape Town. I like to ride there when I get a chance, but it becomes a drag, trying to strap my luggage on the back of my S-1 and from now on,it will be my X-1, which has more space for loading. I don't take much stuff, but going through several weather changes along the way I have to stop and repack when I put rain-gear on etc. So--is there a neat and quick system to help Buellists who live on their bikes to carry a week's supply of clothes etc? |

I'm in close agreement with Ftd, except keep the chin fairing, and polish the tail section. Craig Buell Cycle Center |

Thor, Admittedly, the smoke show peaked about half way through the second beer. When the picture was finally taken, I was finishing the third and running low on fuel....

To keep a clear mind always make sure your photographer isn't spiking your beer. By the way man, where are the other empty beer cans, and exactly what make of rear rubber is that? |

Threw the empties, left handed, into a nearby trash barrel. Swish swish. Litterbugs make me crazy.

Hey Lor, good response, brah...! Heh heh... Now, at the risk of coming across sounding ugly, which isn't my intention--if you don't like litter, why are you straddling it? |

Hey Thor, now don't be not nice. While maybe not the prettiest bike I ever rode, Godzirra! sure had a way of tickling my fun buttons. |

Got a call just yesterday from Godzirra's! new owner, he'll be by to pick it up in the next week or so. I'll miss that bike at track days, it was fun for getting guys on R1's and GSX-R 1000's to scratch their heads and wonder. Not many of the young lads spot the tuned 1100 mill in the engine bay.... It's a great bike for the right environment. The KTM left with it's new owner two Saturdays ago and one of the old BMW's just left this past Saturday: but it'll still be living nearby with a local riding buddy. So that leaves two other BMW's (funky black '72 R75/5 that I'll prolly never sell. And a worked over R100RS hot rod) plus the S1, S2 and S3T Buells. Really been enjoying the Buells lately. Highly entertaining combination of chassis and low-down power that's addictive on your favourite back roads. These things make more sense for real road riding situations than high strung and uncomfortable racer replicas. Have a long-time riding buddy who can just fly on his '03 GSX-R 1000.... He's looking at Buells now, too. |

I've been on H-D since'68, started on a Pan, another Pan, several Flatheads, a Knuckle that I stroked five and a sixteenth with Pan barrels that I put together in an ultra-sexual chop. another Pan, a couple of Shovels...totaling eighteen H-Ds--then in 2000 I became lustful of a hopped S-1 that was cleaning up on the track. I got her but she's been apart more than together. My excellent bud owns a few H-D dealerships here in South Africa, and let me take his demo X-1, and she's been awesome except for some minor stuff. I took a KTM Adventure 950 for a spin...wotta bike! So which KTM did you have, man? |

The KTM was a 400SX moto-crosser. Great bike. Now, we orta let this thread get back to missed shifts and ugly airboxes. Enjoy your bikes, and the fall riding season. |
