Hello Fellas. Put my bike away last Nov and all was well. New oil, new trans fluid, battery taken out, Sta-Bil, you know the drill.
Put fully charged battery back in on Sat, tried to start my '07 XB9R (12K miles) and all I got was clack,clack,clack,clack at the stater. Will not turn over.
Relays and fuses are fine, diode is fine, battery is fine, grounds are fine from what I can tell. Connector 77 changed out last year so that is not the issue.
Solenoid?
Anyone have an idea for me? Hope not to have to remove the starter. Should this happen at only 12K miles?
Thanks for any help, and oh do I hope I am overlooking something simple. |

Are you sure the battery is good? Are the connections clean and tight? Both Battery and frame/starter connections. It should turn over with that low mileage. Although I have had to replace a starter at 14,000. Good luck though and check all connections. |

Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals and then try to start it. If the volts drop to below 6 volts when cranking and it's making that clickety click noise, the battery is not actually fully charged like you thought. The thing to do is to get a battery charger that will charge at about 2 amps and let it charge up overnight. If the battery has any life left, it should readily fire up. |

Maybe it,s the neutral switch!?
So pull your clutch lever and start again.
You can check that also to pull the wire from the neutral switch and ground it to the frame (neutral switch is behind the front pulley)
I have the same thing ,if i don,t pull the clutch lever while starting it,s clacking
but i can life with it!
It,s some extra option against theft |

Thanks for the ideas fellas, will check the battery again tonight. Have had it on a 1.5 amp charger.
She does the same thing with the clutch pulled in or when the neutral indicator is lit, so that seems to be okay.
Oh, I hope it is just the battery  |

You won't go wrong listening to Sparky.
Since you have a 2007 model Buell XB9R, you likely have a nearly four year old battery. It may charge and immediately show a good voltage, but may not hold it overnight and may no longer have adequate capacity to crank the engine.
Cleaning/brightening the posts and connectors may be helpful even if they appear okay.
Highly unlikely there is anything wrong with your starter. |

How did you charge it off season? Battery tender, or car "trickle" charger? You might have baked it... |

aaaaaahhhhhhhh.....the SWEET smell of XB exhaust......
Thanks fellas. A bit ashamed my issue was an improperly charged battery (my fault) but happy as a pig in poop that was the issue. Battery is now fully charged and working as intended (new last year) and she fired right up after an all night charge.
Now I just need the rain to go away.

I have an 03 XB9R that I use as a race bike that has the same problem. Kept me from going to Daytona for CCS week end. Charging the battery today while at work. Hope I get the same good result. If not I will be looking for more ideas. Bike only has possibly 5000 miles on it. |
