Just got this 97 and charged the battery gassed it up and put it in neutral to see if it would fire. I had to pull in the clutch lever as there is a safety switch of some kind I guess that won't let you start in gear. Well as I pushed the starter button the bike surged forward and the engine would barely turn. It would seem that the clutch is engaged.Any other thoughts and help appreciated.

Could be a improper clutch adjustment ???

The clutch'es are the wet type and will drag when cold when you try to start in gear ...

There is a switch on the clutch bracket that will not let you start unless you pull the clutch lever all the way in !!!

I will try the adjustment . However I am trying to start in neutral so should the clutch under normal circumstances not figure into the equation ? Thanks for the reply.

Your clutch needs to be engaged (lever out) for the starter to turn the motor over. You also need to be in neutral or you run the risk of making a new door in the garage should the bike start. If it is trying to lunge forward when you hit the starter button, Your in a gear.

Would it be possible that your primary chain is WAY to tight ?.

Primary seems to be fine . I'll check the clutch adj tomorrow and report.

Is that because the neutral light is on or the bike rolls with the lever out?
Based on my experience the light is not 100% reliable.

I am in neutral. The neutral light doesn't work on this bike. I trailered the bike here and have rolled it all over so the neutral question is settled. I adjusted the clutch per the specs and it seems a little better. This bike has been sitting a few months so I'm wondering if the plates are not stuck ??

If you let a wet clutch set for months, this what you do before you start the engine ...

Put it in low gear, pull th clutch, and rock the bike to and fro(never heard this before have you) to break the clutch loose ...

"i" do this if my bike has set for a couple of days ...

Any time "i" start off from home "i" get the bike rolling down the drive way and then with the clutch pulled, put it in gear ...

THIS MAKES THE LOW GEAR PARTS LAST LONGER !!!

It doesn't matter if the plates are stuck. Thats the same as engaged. It would only make it harder to put it IN gear if the plates are stuck. What you are saying in your original post is that your bike is in neutral, clutch lever out and when you hit the starter, it wants to lunge forward and puts a good strain on the starter. Correct ?. The only thing that will make it lunge forward is that it is in A gear, it maybe a high gear like 4 or 5 so it's not such a big jump but that's the only way I know of that can happen. Maybe there's a inmate here who lives close and could devote a little time and help you.
