Anybody have an ECM spy cable? Looks like a great idea, not sure if I would know what to do with it though. Is it only useful if you are very experienced? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&item=160405888739&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK %3AMEWAX%3AIT Cheers. |

I think American Sportbike can sell you a cable. http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/index. php?app=ccp0&ns=catshow&ref=buell&sid=6190x92aq58s s34r00k89sh03xy06sio&portrelay=1 Check out this site too http://www.musclecross.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id= 194 and also this site http://www.xoptiinside.com/ |

Is it only useful if you are very experienced? ECMSpy gives you enough access to the engine software to make very expensive bits go "boom" very quickly if you don't know what you're doing. Which is why I haven't messed with it. |

It is very useful if you have a pre '07 Buell because it allows you to reset the TPS. And no, you don't need to be an expert tuner to use it for the TPS resets. Their tuning guide is pretty helpful with that. Aside from that, I would'nt go messing with the fuel maps unless you know what you are a doing. |

The user guide that comes in the ECM Spy software also compliments the service manual for things like TPS reset, timing checks, diagnostic code deciphering (unless you like to read blinking dash light sequences), and a smattering of other simple processes, including a charging system check and FI check, if I recall. I'm +1 with Larryjohn on fuel maps but there are enough other things that having it allows you to do that not having it isn't unthinkable but more difficult to accomplish unless you have a tech/mech that you can (and do) trust. It also has some logging and diagnostic features that allow someone on this board to better help you from afar if/when you do encounter a problem. |

+1 Ratbuell, Larryjohn and 7873jake. I use it for TPS and AFV and diagnositics anything other than fuel maps. |

I bought the cable and the software on eBay. I wanted to be able to read the error codes and perhaps do a TPS reset, but it turned out to be far more valuable than that. My ECM started failing due to some internal short, and before it croaked I was able to read in and store the fuel map. Then, I was able to purchase a used ECM online. Since the ECMs are all the same from a hardware standpoint, I could get one that came from any Buell X series. Then, I was able to dump the map that I had stored from the old ECM onto the new one, and bob's your uncle, she ran like new. So for me the $50 or whatever I paid was well worth it. |

ecmspy is still floating around, you will have to look for it. i expect to get good results, starting with the tps reset for the pipe that should arrive next week (Dealer wants $60)! i just bought the cable from mouser electronics $20 (pn: 895-TTL-232R-5V-WE) and the plug end from ladd inc for 3.87 (pn: DT06-4S). i happen to live near a ladd warehouse so i drove to pick it up. cable should be here tomorrow. there are PLENTY of guides on how not to nuke your bike and how to tune it properly, tps reset and other functions of the sort. here is a a link to one of the 'official' ones. http://www.ecmspy.com/download/BuellTuningGuide_EN _V2.0.pdf it's a must read! read it twice other than that 1. save the original eeprom and map. 2. save it somewhere else too 3. make changes slowly 4. google ( there are several blogs drawn out in verious levels of detail 5. ask I hope this helps. |

ok, FYI, the guide is VERY in depth, full of techno babble, but loads of information. Don't let it intimidate you! The forums will guide you to what you WANT to do, use the guide to make sure you do it right. The program is pretty straight forward. |

Hey Twistedrose, there is no need to do a TPS reset when changing a pipe. That change will not effect the throttle position. |

Well, I have alot of mods happening right now, I am doing the pipe, opening the airbox (dremil style), and breather re-route as far as hardware. i also am getting the cable today so I want to try to clean up my fuel maps. I will be using the ecmspy with the megalog viewer to help smooth it out. the worst part is i dont have a palm, i just bought the android phone instead, so that means i have to strap the laptop to my back or bike when i test ride. i just did the headlight mod yesterday so they both come on with the brights. I just got back from over seas so i had big plans. so far i am only at $200 for all of the mods oh, and i am going to try to fab a plate holder so i can get rid of that huge thing on the back of the bike bra-ha-ha-ha TR 06 Uly |

and thanks thunder, i guess i should have been more specific, i the tps reset is required for the tuning i plan on starting this afternoon with the maps with megalog though it will all have to wait until i get my pipe back, but i wanted to play with it so i am going to reset the afv, and smooth out the maps. then i will have to wait for my pipe to get in and do it for real, Hawk should recieve the pipe tomorrow so i hope to get it back in about 5-7 days. it is all making me very anxious and impatient . i have not been this excited about my bike since i bought it in 06! |

I've been studying and combing over ECM spy myself and it seems very user friendly to me. I used to have an 07 Warrior with a power commander and it seems very similar in software and setup. Just make sure you know what everything does which isn't all that hard. AFV, TPS etc. |

Thanks to everybody for the advice. I have ordered the cable, and will try not to "nuke" my bike shortly after it arrives Cheers. |

The auction I won on e-bay comes with the software on a CD. Are there different versions of the software? |

I don't think it matters much unless you have a late model or want to run it on a mac. The version I have is 1.12.1 and it worked great when I hooked it up today. Which by the way I got my cable and put it together today, now just need that pipe although it was just delivered to Hawk today HA HA! |
