They do. Proper tension helps prolong their life. Only way to know is to check. I have 50K on mine, and its fine.

I checked mine at 47,000 miles and it was fine.

The shoe wears to a certain point and stops wearing.
The chain sideplates cut into it, until they reach the depth of the rollers. At that point, wear on the shoe stops.

That is because the chain has grove'ed the plastic to where the chain in now properly loose and dose not grove the plastic any more ...
