So...I have a new 09 xb12ss with about 150 miles on it that I purchased just after the Oct. D-day. Today it was in the upper 30's so I went out in the garage and fired up a few vehicles including the xb12.(wanted to hear the new Spec Ops too) The new xb12 started up (not easily)and after idling for a few minutes the oil light came on but would go out at higher rpms. I shut it off and checked the oil, when removing the dipstick a bit of oil ran out due to the oil level was at the very top of the hole. What gives..any ideas? Was it due to the cold temps and 20w50 oil? Leave it alone til spring ? It was fine last fall for the first 150 miles....

Whoa, that CAN'T be right. When the engine is cold, the oil almost doesn't even show up on the dipstick if it's filled CORRECTLY. Someone obviously got a little overzealous in filling it. No idea what kind of problems that could cause... but I bet it's sucking oil somewhere it shouldn't. I'd drain that sucker and start over. Maybe someone else can point out things to keep an eye out for now that it's been run overfull.

Also, check to see if it smells strongly of gasoline... maybe there's an internal leak and the oil reservoir is taking on other fluids.

Might wanna check your transmission fluid levels also, just to make sure they're filled properly.

You should run thinner oil in the winter; 10w40 I believe is what the manual recommends.

I'd drain it and see how much you come up with. If it's way more than recommended (2.5 quarts I believe) than you know that's your problem... overfilled.

If you come up with the correct amount of oil, then you may have a serious issue.

Came up with 3 quarts just out of the swingarm (did not remove filter). Refilled with correct amount...much better looking. Bikes oil light still flickers at idle . Will be calling dealer to gripe about oil overfill tomorrow .

Did you refill with 10w40 or 20w50? If you stuck with the summer weight oil you're light's going to flash when you're below 40.

did it smell like fuel at all? if you can, check that.

i had one i bought and when it showed up(used off ebay) they had fouled a plug and tried to run it to clean it and make it spark. all it did was foul worse and force fuel past the rings and into the case and swingarm. so in other words it was full.
