Okay looking for some tips to use for some packing on the new insert I made for the D&D. I tried lighting some steel wool on fire and it caught ablaze really fast so for me it's out. Anyone got some more ideas or do you think just try out the insert without any packing? I have yet to run with just the new baffle in just yet. Still pretty cold in the garage.

Standard fiberglass will burn out relatively quickly on this type of pipe. 4-5k miles and it will start getting louder. E-glass will probably last a little longer, and good sport packing can make it 20k miles or more. I posted some stuff a while back that was similar to asbestos in resistance to heat/fire without the cancer dangers (I think) but I don't know where it is now. : (
Google for it, it's out there somewhere and it was fairly cheap as I recall.

My buddy on his r1 has a hindle rear side mount we took apart to repack after 10k. Needless to say it barely needed any.I've come to the conclusion that any undermount exhaust on this bike will burn the packing out regardless of what type if its steel or wool.Maybe some really thick ss packing would do the job.I had stainless packing in my exhaust. After I cut it open to make mods I noticed that the stainless packing was missing and it was blue and burnt to dust in some spots.Overall what I'm getting at is nothing will hold up a 1600 degree flame pounding right off the header.I have a disagreement with the underslung muffler dsesign.Yeah me saying that will open a can of worms.

Its just to close to the header.Nothing undermount will hold up to solid 1600 degree heat beating. The stock pipe construction is heavy for a reason. It's made to hold up to a 1600 degree heat pounding.

Thats why I sold my jardine. It would never hold up.I believe tearing into a muffler every 5k is a little ridiculous.I ride that in a couple months.
The drummer and the stock exhaust seem to be the two that hold up and require no maintenance. There will be a 2 guys posting new system that is in progress now .It will be in the next couple months.Hellgates one of the two.
