>BTW those Nylock nuts will not be too effective unless you have some of the screw sticking through the nylon locking feature.

looks good Jkelly, have you tried it on the bike? How do you like it?
Its been so damn cold here in NJ that I have not gotten another chance to ride since mounting the phone. I did ride it when it was about 25 degrees. I dont mind the cold, but now that we have gotten snow and ice and their is salt on the road I am packing her up till the conditions are better. |

My Stem mount arrived today and I see what you mean about it not working as described... What did you do to get around the issue? I'd rather not re-invent the wheel if you've already done the hard work  |

This is what I did:
First of all I cut the bottom of the mounting piece off. You know how it protrudes about a 1/2" I cut it off and sanded it flat. You dont have to do this, but it makes it sit flush.
For the install, its pretty easy...
-First cut a 1/4" piece of the rubber insert on the smallest end. Press that into the allen hold on the stem nut. It will be tight but will fit.
-Then put the allen screw into the mount and then thread it through the hole in the rubber insert. You will have to thread it in because the hole will be squished a little. Its a long screw, if you have a cordless drill with allen bits it will save your forearms!
This is the tricky part. Easier then it sounds though.
First remove the front fender
You will need
-a few 1/4" socket extensions. I believe I used one 6" and one 4".
-a 1/4" deep socket for whatever size nylon nut then supplied. I forget what size it was
-Put the nylon nut in the socket, then put the washer on top of the socket(you cant just use the nut, it will come back through the stem nut). I used a tiny strip of masking tape, and taped it onto the end of the socket. This will just hold it in place while you are fishing it up the neck.
- now from the bottom start fishing it up, adding extensions as you go. The neck is fairly narrow, so it is actually very easy to find the end of the screw. There isnt much wiggle room.
Tighten it down, and you are done, thats it. Not rocket science by any means, but just took a little creativity.
If you have trouble fishing it up from the bottom try removing the fairing if you have a R, or you could always remove the wheel for more clearance.
Once I had a plan it didnt take more then a 1/2 hour to do start to finish.

Good Grief - I'd never have thought of that that's brilliant!
I was actually thinking of taking the nut off, putting a rubber washer underneath that with a stainless washer on top of it and a nylock nut and then putting the mount on top of the nut (still off the bike) and doing it up tight.
Then refitting the nut to the stem and doing it up with a big spanner..
Bear in mind I haven't taken delivery of the bike yet so I am working on the assumption that it's possible to do the nut up that way (????)

That wouldnt work if I am understanding your correctly. The steering stem nut sunken in. they only want to tighten it is with allen hole which this part fits into.
My way is pretty easy as long as you have the right tools to do it. I havent had a problem with it. |
