anyone remove the packing from the vance and hines ssr2 pipe? how much louder is it at idle? With the packing, its too quiet for my tastes at idle... |

swap it for a D&D. It's louder, and you never have to repack it! Some have repacked their V&H with steel wool and reported a deeper exhaust note, possibly a little louder. Steel wool should last longer than the stock fiberglass too. You'll still have to repack it eventually. Get the D&D! |

I bought a Blast that had an empty V&H on it. IT WAS LOUD!!! And really obnoxious. I didn't realize how bad it sounded until one day riding next to a concrete lane divider. I'm looking around for the life-saving Harley. Damn, it was me! I pulled it and put a Pro-Series on it and it now sounds like a really healthy Briggs and Straton 1 lunger. Let's go mow something! |

If you repack with steel wool make sure it is STAINLESS STEEL WOOL. http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-mak e-fire-with-steel-wool-and-a-9-volt-battery-174684 / Regular steel wool does not seem like a good choice. |

The hollow V&H will likely stress fracture somewhere. The steel wool packing sounds like a good idea.. I ran my bike without packing for an afternoon. Sounded great, and believe it or not did affect performance slightly in the negative direction. I don't know how that is even possible, but then again there is nothing more finicky than that damn FI on the X1's.... |

I know my S2 was much quieter when it was stock. Once I put in the X1 cams and the thunderstorm top end (with S1W race ignition box)...it definitely got some more bark to it. It's still more mellow than my S1W though...I chalk that up to the different header (stock 2" on the S2; Buell 2.5" race header on the S1W) and possibly different packing in the mufflers (both Buell race cans; the S2 has a 2" to 2.5" adaptor). |

Back in'96 Rickie d opened up the stock S2 mufflers and took out the center tube (I think it was the center one). It really sounded much better and kept the stock look. I wish I had that muffler yet to put on #1000. I can't get used to how quite the stocker is after the race header and muffler on #244. Kevin |

The PO of my X1 took everything out of the V&H including the baffle. It was loud. I ordered the packing and the baffle directly from V&H and the tech guy said it would improve performance and it did. It was still loud but not obnoxious. IMO it is just right. Now after ~4000 miles it is getting a bit louder so I'm guessing its time for repack. I'll consider going the steel wool route this time. |
