Quick history:
Never had a turn signal failure

Prepared my 09 1125R for a track day last weekend by unplugging the headlights using the single connector to the harness, removed the front mirrors/signals, and removed the rear signals and tail light.

Gave the bike a quick wash today and blew out the remaining water with compressed air like I usually do.

Put the bodywork and signals back on the rear, and reconnected the headlights. I did not reconnect the front signals yet.

Turned on the key and the signal started going on the left side and blinking fast. The switch was in the center position. I tried moving the switch left and right, then back to center. Now the right signal is flashing when the switch is either in the center or left position, and nothing flashes with the switch in the right position.

I figured it must be some kind of deal where if all the signals aren't connected it freaks out. So I connected the front signals.

With all the signals hooked up, it now flashes at the correct rate. However, it is still doing the same thing where the right signals flash if the switch is either left or center, and nothing flashes with the switch in the right position.

I opened up the switch and blew compressed air into it, but there wasn't really any water.

Also, the tiny lightbulbs on the very outside of each headlight assembly do not illuminate. I'm not sure if that is new or if I'm just noticing it because I'm scrutinizing everything. They do not light with either high or low beams on.

The remainder of the left handlebar switches work fine (i.e. horn, high/low beam, and high beam flash trigger).

There are a few historical trouble codes that display in diag mode, but they are all from when I got the latest ECM flash and the tech didn't delete them. There are no new codes.

Any ideas what is going on or what I should check next?

Personally...I wouldn't have washed it with stuff unplugged, but that's just me and electricity.

Unhook everything and let it sit long enough to dry out.

There wasn't any water in the turn signal connectors since I blew them out with compressed air. Even if there was, it would not have any impact on the function of the switch in terms of what side is activated. The connectors are also completely independent of one another, thereby eliminating the possibility of a short circuit caused by moisture.

I took a look at the other thread going on here about what resistor to use for aftermarket signals. In there, someone said that the turn signal control circuit is located inside the instrument cluster.

Considering I live in a very dry climate (Southern California), and my IC has fogged up on the inside after sitting outside overnight just from being exposed to condensation, it wouldn't surprise me if the IC was faulty. If I lived in a very wet climate, I believe it would have had to be replaced under warranty long ago.

Even if moisture has not gotten inside the IC, I can't see any other component of the system that is capable of causing these symptoms. Hopefully the problem won't just go away on its own and then reappear after my warranty expires.

Stupid question, but are the connectors connected backwards?

The wiring diagrams suggest that connecting connector 38 backwards (if possible would disconnect the marker lights, but still allow the headlights to operate normally.

As for the turn signals, having the switch in the middle should be a disconnect, this can be checked at connector 24. Pins 5 and 7 would be shorted for right turn, Pins 5 and 6 for left turn. This appears to be a bad turn switch, test the switch at the plug.

...unless one of your hot leads grounded momentarily via water....could also be a problem in the LH switch housing. Do you pressure wash?

I don't think the signals can be plugged in 'backwards' as they have reverse-gendered connectors. They only go on one way.

Have you seen any other problems in the IP other than occasional condensation?

Ron, it sounds like a ground issue. Recheck that all the connectors are seated well.

This happens to my bike when I wash it if I get the switch too wet.

Keep the water spray away from the handle bars or wrap a little plastic wrap around the switch assembly.

when i have used a water hose or quick wash type car wash on my 1125r the same constant flashing takes place. strangely enough, when riding through a couple hours of rain, the turn signals never came on continuously. i quit using hoses to clean the bike! : ) fast fash rate is a sign of one turn signal inop. i saw a lot of this until i put aftermarket rear signals on the rear of the r. i have unplugged the blinkers and used hand signals until the continuous flashing stopped.

I'll check to see if the headlight plug is backwards. I don't think it is because I remember there being a clip that engages on only one side of the plugs.

I wash the bike with a garden hose using a wide angle spray. The only parts I hit with a narrow angle are the outsides of the wheels.

I was thinking about it last night, and when the bike was on the trailer going to the track, it got rained on pretty hard overnight. So I'll check the circuits as described above, but I'm thinking that rain could have done something too.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Wiggle the wires going to the switch.
If anything happens, have your dealer check the wiring.

Been doing electronics and wiring for 30+ years, so I did mine myself.
Twice, two different wires broke at the switch.

After the second fix, I removed some material from the fairing brace in a shallow "U" shape on top to relieve the lateral stress on the wires.

Another thread proving how valuable BWB is! BTW, if Vtwinbuells 12:06AM post (12/4) a picture from the Service Manual or Electrical Manual? Looks like something I wouldn't mind owning myself.

Every time I wash my bike and spray the switchgear, that exact thing happens.

Let it dry, and if it goes away, that was it.

I don't do that any more, btw. Just gave up on washing....

Mike,
That pic is out of the electrical manual, it also has wiring diagrams, troubleshooting charts, and CEL code info.

The switch resistance values checked out fine according to John's post above. I also noticed that the tail light was out. The brake light works just not the tail light.

So the bike is now at the dealer and hopefully they'll find the problem. The manager there looked at the diagram and had the same impression that the only component that could explain the problems is the instrument cluster.

If the license plate light is out also, read the following, otherwise ignore the rest of this.

I think I found your problem, there is a 10A accessory fuse(between pin 6 and 12) in the Fuse Block(next to the battery). This fuse powers pin 5 to the turn signal switch, tail light, license plate light, and front marker lights. The turn signal switch(pin 5 on connector 24 pin/cluster side) would be receiving approximately a 0.5 - 2 Ohm(from the bulbs) to ground or reading 0 volts while the accessory is on with a bad fuse. If the fuse is good, you should see voltage there in park.

Not sure about the license plate light. It has been disconnected since I put on the Jardine undertail kit. A fuse being blown would possibly explain nothing working, but I don't see it leading to lights illuminating in complete disagreement with the switch position. Hopefully it will be more than a blown fuse because the dealer will probably not cover a fuse under warranty...

The switch sends a signal to the cluster to tell it no blinker, left, or right. The cluster powers the blinkers, and gets it's power before the fuse. An invalid input signal to the cluster may be causing the blinker problem. Hopefully the dealer covers the problem under warranty for you.

Ugh, you guys are thinking too hard. This issue has been brought up before, by me and others. If you spray the turn signal switch with a hose, it'll make this happen. Let it dry for a while, it'll come back to normal.

Like I said before, keep the switch dry when washing and you'll never have a problem.

I now return you to your inspector gadget/ mr. Wizzard hybrid thread, already in progress.

Happens to me alot. Its the switch getting water in it.I diconnected all my lights and it still indicated on my cluster one time.I now put shopping bags over my switches and cluster when washing the bike or I dont spray water anywhere near em.

Had this problem with the 1125R and the XB. Water + Turnsignal Switch = weirdness.
