While replacing the flywheel output shaft seal today I managed to damage something while removing the old one. Here's a pic: As you can see the ring on the outside of the bearings is slightly tweaked, as far as I can tell it's not affecting anything, but would like to see what you guys think to be safe. |

It's the bearing retainer. You could attempt to reshape it without too much effort. It shouldn't cause you any problems if it's no worse than it looks in the pic, but you need to be careful the retainer is not affecting the running of that one roller inside the corresponding cage. Still, best to straighten it really. Rocket |

Don't see a retainer in the pic but you can straighten the pictured tweaked separator/cage with 2 thin screwdrivers counter rotated against each other. |

I'm with the others - straighten it as best you can and make sure that one roller isn't impeded any. |

Timken tapered roller bering, available at any bering wholesaler ... Are those pressed on the shaft? If not I'd replace. I'd hate to do a bottom end job later for a fifty dollar or so bering... But, there are other opinions out there, and most important is YOURS, what makes you comfortable. |

You have to split the cases and press that bearing off to replace it. Like Rocket said, try to straighten the cage out - VERY CAREFULLY You will probably be OK as long as the cage isn't touching anything. Bearing retainer, bearing cage = same thing.. Thanks for all the responses guys. I straightened it out the best I could and everything seemed to be fine and not impeded at all, so I buttoned it back up. So far so good! |
