I've seen a number of posts that mention not using the clutch in certain circumstances. I would have previously assumed shifting without the clutch could cause some significant damage is this not the case?

Can you run through the gears without the clutch after you get rolling? Do you let off the throttle some and then stick the gear or...?

Any pointers appreciated... Thanks

Dave

I almost never use the clutch on any of my bikes, especially in the higher gears.

I can shift up and down without the clutch from 3rd through 6th, and it do it smoother than I can with the clutch. The lower gears are pretty choppy.

If you can do it smooth, there's no real harm. The bike bucks and bangs when you do it, you're gonna eff something up.

For upshifting, pre-load the shift lever with your toe. A quick blip of the throttle will bring it up a gear. I do it all the time and done right is a really smooth shift.
Downshifting is a little harder and rough on the tranny IMO since you have to bring the engine revs UP after shifting. Had to do it once on a older 550 when I broke a clutch cable to get her home.

There IS a bit of technique involved. I recommend practising on a bit of a lesser machine before trying this, only due to my personal experience and riding skills. One of the Bike magazines had an article about this. Do not recall which one or when- sometimes I read old mags...maybe a inter-web search could help. Good luck.
